Can we use the Optimize feature on movie extras?

It seems that the Optimize feature only optimizes the main movie and not the movie’s extras. Is there an option to do that? The detail page of the movie only has a play button overlayed on the extras’ thumbnails. It doesn’t have the “three dots” on the individual extras.

Why would you want to optimize the extras?

You may have misunderstood what the Extras are.

Will answer what I know.
Optimizing means you have a local 1080p with higher bitstream, and you want to direct play on a mobile phone without transcoding it, then you can optimize the media to be supported on that platform.

Or you want to optimize any media to fully support any platform without taxing your cpu.

They only apply to your “local” media, as it is your cpu’s responsibility to try to direct play/direct stream/transcode to be able to be played in a specific device.

Now for “Extras” these are streamed to you from a licensed online provider, just like Youtube. They are not stored in your local media (unless you made your own extra movie, which is another story).

So technically, you can’t optimize it, because similar to Youtube, it’s not from your end of the device, its coming from another provider’s Computer/system.

However, if you are having trouble streaming the “Extras” as in its buffering or from slow connection, you can lower the quality/bandwidth which is suitable and recommended for low connections (again, similar to Youtube where you lower the streaming quality from 1080p to 720p or 480p)

This can be done from the Client’s/Player Settings ----> Streaming Quality ----> Online Quality (this controls the Trailers as well).

That demonstrates thinking so far inside the boundaries of The Box it barely represents Thinking at all.

Given the shortcomings of Plex the only reliable way to optimize your video (local extras included) is to gather it manually (by any means necessary) and pre-optimize it yourself according to your own definitions of ‘acceptable quality’ so it will direct play on all your devices long before Plex has a chance to destroy it in a transcode session. That includes, if necessary, creating an extra version for remote use that can be selected at playback and that also direct plays.

That is thinking outside the box.

Thanks. Yes. I was referring to local extras that I’ve ripped and stored locally as per the local media assets movies instructions that show up now as Extras under the main feature film.

Great idea.
