To associate the server with your account (claim the server), Plex Media Server must communicate with hosts at plex.tv. If it cannot do so, claiming will fail. One reason this can happen is to DNS timeouts, when the server cannot successfully resolve plex.tv hostnames. It is a solvable problem.
-
What Plex version were you installing? 1.30.0, 1.30.1?
-
Set the Synology to use a public DNS such as 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare), 8.8.8.8 (Google), 9.9.9.9 (Quad9), etc.
-
Make sure the NAS has the correct time.
This also verifies DNS is working correctly.
- Control Panel → Regional Options → Time.
- Make sure the time zone is correct.
- Choose to Synchronize with NTP Server.
- Pick a desired server: pool.ntp.org, time.nist.gov, time.google.com.
- Click Update Now.
- It should synchronize with the time server and return status = Normal.
-
Run the installation again, using the claim token method.
-
If the claim process fails, point a browser at the IP address of the NAS.
For example, if the IP address is 10.1.2.3, use http://10.1.2.3:32400/web.
See if you can then login and claim the NAS. -
If that does not work, login to the NAS using an account with admin privileges.
Using File Stations, navigate to the Plex Media Server data directory,/PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server.
Compress theLogsdirectory, download, and attach to the thread.
What version is currently installed?
ok, something interesting has happened. I went back and installed from the last working version, 1.21.0-3744 from the package center, and when I logged into the IP address server, it was not the 1.21 look or feel, what I felt was maybe the 1.30.16497. It had a new layout AND! it asked if I wanted to claim the server! So I went ahead and went through the motions. It picked everything up and my libraries are there, asked if I wanted to fix the META data, sure thing, go for it.
BUT! it still isn’t able to claim the server. I can see my library and update the library, but everytime i try to claim the library, it fails
ok so i just tried uninstalling it and installing it both ways by ways of the claim code and without, and still not able to claim library I checked the DNS and it seems everyhting is working and updated to current time
it also states theres a newer update that the 1.30.1.6497, whci I just installed fresh from the website…?
edit: ok so I tried again with installing the current version, updated DNS Time and now I am getting the previous
"Failed to install package
ERROR: Could not cmplete dialog with Plex.tv. Unable to claim.
Either installation was too long or difficulties communication with Plex.tv exist.
Please try again or seek assistance in our Support Forum."
But it installs fine without doing the claim code, but then cant claim server once inside Plex
here are the logs
-
Please stop everything.
-
Stop switching versions. You are only making things worse.
-
You can upload log files directly to the forum. No need for 3rd party sites.
Just drag the zip file into the message window. It will insert at the cursor location.
4. Please verify Synology NAS model and DSM version.
The log files you provided are from a DS218+ running DSM 6.
You previously stated you are using a DS1821+ (which is running DSM 7 based on the PMS versions).
Edit: Not sure what happened, but I just re-downloaded the files and have the ones for an 1821+. Reviewing now…
Thanks for the log files.
They are from yesterday, when the NAS was running PMS 1.21.0-3744. They’ve no info for PMS 1.30.x.
They are full of timeout errors where the server cannot communicate with plex.tv. This is why the server could not be claimed.
Please be aware that 1.21.0 and 1.30.x are incompatible with each other. The Plex database is stored in different locations. Switching back and forth will not help.
Thanks for checking DNS and system time.
Let’s back up a couple of steps…
-
Reboot the Synology.
-
Wait for it to fully boot.
-
If Plex is not already running, manually start it and wait 1 - 2 minutes for it to fully start.
-
Using a private/incognito browser window, to to http://192.168.1.23:32400/web (the IP address of the NAS). The private windows bypasses any browser plug-ins that might interfere.
What do you see?
Can you login, access server settings, claim the server, etc?
If you see a “this is not hosted at plex.tv” message, that is OK. It is coming from your server.
If you see the setup screens - to add libraries, etc - skip those steps.
- If you still cannot access the server, pull a fresh set of log files (stop Plex, compress the Logs directory, etc).
Thanks.
ok, restarted the Synology, logged back into plex server under incognito, typed in IP address and gives me the Web Setup choose my preferred Server, I chose mine, customized media with pinned sources, finished setup. My library is there, went to settings and general to claim server, changed to login page which states there is a server on this IP address. Login, switches back to the Claim Server page, then stops and never claims the server.
Here is the log files
May I suggest something here?
- On Plex.tv , the last connected server is from PMS 1.21.0.3744
- The logs show 1.30.1.6497

When you go to: DSM → Control Panel → Network → ETH0
– Here you see 192.168,1.23
– Is the default gateway address the same as the modem/router
– Is the DNS address the same as the router?
Example:
NAS = 192.168.1.23
Router = 192.168.1.1
DNS = 192.168.1.1
Gateway = 192.168.1.1
Example: Here is my DS418 (192.168.0.71) configured for my router/DNS which is at 192.168.0.1

I can see yours trying but it can’t find (DNS) Plex.tv to finish the process.
