My servers are just gone, both on plex.tv and locally

Server Version#: Synology 64bit 3.41.3.9314.70009324
Player Version#: Android 4.2

Been running this server for years and have not changed anything for ages. Only visited the admin web gui to help identifying new media.
2 days ago I noted that I no longer could reach my server from local apps or the webgui of the server. Can just see personal info but server tab is missing. I’ve tried to log out, login but server tab is still missing.
Same issue logged into plex.tv. my “server” is just gone.
I have an active plex pass subscription.

Did you by chance change your password and opt to sign-out all devices? This will also unclaim the server.

Can you still see the server if you open rot via the bundled web app?
e.g. opening http://127.0.0.1:32400/web in a browser if you’re on the same machine or http://[PMS IP]:32400/web if the server is on a different machine inside the same network?

I am having the same issue today on Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS. I thought it was something I did as I just moved my server to a new system a month ago. Thankfully I have a backup from November so not all is lost, but very strange that they just disappeared.

I had to reinstall Plex completely. It was no longer detecting the install and my it would not load at all until I reinstalled. From there I was able to make a new server and I could see it remembered my old server. It could not connect to it though.

I did not change my password and I signed out and back in to see if that helped, but it did not.

@DandalfTheWhite

Plex.tv sees the ‘pop-os’ (name) server was was created 3 hours ago then deleted.

If you’re still having problems, please stop PMS and make a tar.gz of the Logs directory.

( FYI: You’ve got a Linux host and are posting in the Synology forum )

I restored my backup after uninstalling and reinstalling and then re-added any media I’d added in the last month and everything is working again. Not sure why it stopped working. But fixed either way.

(I’m gonna be totally honest and I just assumed Synology was a distro I never heard of, sorry about that.)

Fyi no I have a Synology server.
The one you are probably refering to is an old linux server that died some years ago and was replaced by a new server, using the Synology app.

As I wrote earlier, yes I can use the web gui of the server but it comes up as a plex client only. In setting there are only client settings and no server to admin.
No, I have not changed any passwords and can still logout/login.

@Karlake

Looking at your account, I see a server: DSM 7.2.64570-3
Server name begins with zap.....

Is this the server ?

Are you able to uninstall the package with the GUI and then reinstall the same SPK with the Plex Claim Token method ?

re-claiming it will bring everything back into the server and the contents of the server will be again visible in Plex.web

Yes, that’s the one!
To remove a packet from the nas is easy.
The rest sounded like some sort of Greek.
Reclaim token??
As I said before, this server has been “an appliance” under the “It works, don’t touch” category so I’m not really familiar with any token methods

Here’s the FAQ for this (with pictures).

Let me know if this doesn’t solve it.

I started out that I couldn’t update my server with the manual update because of a cert issue. Today I went out to the gui with the account I manage my server and it popped up message that I wasn’t authorized for the server and the message disappeared. Everything disappeared related to the server and I see no options to locate server in the configuration. I’ve also had this server running for years and have had plex pass with 0 issues until this month. I have an option to grant access to clients to my media but no management of it. What is going on at plex.

Also I am on DSM 6. Are the instructions the same?

Seems draconian that there isn’t a find and claim option but requires and uninstall and reinstall… What was the root cause of losing admin access to my plex media server. Nothing on my plex server has changed. DId something on your end change. Did someone somehow claim my server from me?

@msbnebtv

On DSM 6, uninstall / reinstall is not required. You don’t gain anything by doing so.

On DSM 7, Uninstall / reinstall is solely to use the scripting built into the menus (which DSM 6 does not have)

For you, please look here at this procedure (DSM 6)

Let me know if you have questions.

ALSO, as FYI, might you consider DSM 7 ?

I had considered DSM 7 but Plex is not the only server application that is being hosted and there are differences that I didn’t want to deal with.

Still would like to understand why did I lose access to my server from my admin account in the first place? It’s obvious there was some event that affected multiple users hosting Plex servers. I was on the server trying to update it when I ran into a cert issue on 12/21, I didn’t try yesterday which I’m guessing is when this t happened and today was the first time since 12/21. I’ve had this server for almost 3 years and have not had an issue and I religiously update patches.

Without seeing everything that happened, I have no idea why the server got into a certificate problem.

MOST (almost all) of the certificate problems I see are one of the following.

  1. DNS failures
  2. Server host date/time out of sync with Internet time (NTP)
  3. Another certificate is installed on the host and superseding Plex’s (causes name mismatch)
  4. Damaged file permissions in the Plex/PlexMediaServer shared folder which prevents the new certificate from being saved AND the old certificate being deleted.

I’m checking one possible cause but don’t know yet if it’s real or not

Okay, This is from my other post that hasn’t been responded but Chrome failed with net::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID when I tried to download the plex media server update and when I tried to log in to the Community forum for support. This is completely outside of my PSM instance on my NAS. I know that Chrome has updated some of its safe browsing options so I’m not sure if this is a factor. Maybe their verification has changed where they are more stringent.

If you go to advanced it says
"plex.tv normally uses encryption to protect your information. When Chrome tried to connect to plex.tv this time, the website sent back unusual and incorrect credentials. This may happen when an attacker is trying to pretend to be plex.tv, or a Wi-Fi sign-in screen has interrupted the connection. Your information is still secure because Chrome stopped the connection before any data was exchanged.

You cannot visit plex.tv right now because the website uses HSTS. Network errors and attacks are usually temporary, so this page will probably work later."

Will try this tomorrow. It’s xmas eve and I’m not sober enough to do anything that has to do with logic atm.

Will report back after I’ve tried it.

Not being sober enough has NEVER stopped me!

Merry Christmas

If you’re getting that in your browser then the browser is messed up.
This is what you should be getting.

Sorry I should have been more explicit with the link that was failing.

This is the location that is failing
https://plex.tv/downloads/latest/5?channel=16&build=linux-x86_64&distro=synology&X-Plex-Token=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

This was the link generated from the Plex Media server to manually download and install.

Also if I go to https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/?cat=mobile&plat=ios&duid=33#plex-media-server and https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/?cat=mobile&plat=ios&duid=33#plex-app

It does say the connection is secure and the certificate is correct but these 2 tabs fail with Something went wrong. The list of apps is not available at this time.
