I have just completely redone my server, but the new media manager will not let me add movies to a collection. I type a collection name in the box and click save, and it goes back to the main media screen. If I look at the edit screen again, no collection entry. Also no collections show up when I click the collection entry in the filter box.
I poked around the logs a bit, but didn’t see anything, but then I’m not exactly sure where to look.
I had the same issue and got helped: Just try using to select one or multiple items with holding the SHIFT or CTRL key pressed. The collections feature appears in the left toolbox together with a combine funktion… Very easy and convinient, if you know how 
Thanks! This worked, and once the collection was created, I could add it from the media edit screen. You just can't make a new collection form there
I finally figured this out. When you select a movie (or multi select using Shift/Ctrl) you then go the Edit > Tags.
You type in the name of the Collection (eg XXX) and as you do there is a window that appears below the text window which say “Add XXX”. You press on this sub window and it puts the name in the Tag box. Then press save
