Cannot find Plex Media Server on Synology DS918+

Server Version#:1.13.8.5395-10d48da0d
Player Version#:web or Apple TV

I have read a lot of similar issues but nothing seems to work for me. Here is my current setup:

Broadband Internet from ATT&T U-Verse - using their modem/router plus using an Apple Extreme Air as a repeater. My Synology DS918+ is plugged into a Cisco 24 port Giga Switch (hardwired).

I have followed the instructions to configure my router to open a port through the router config of setting up a NAT/Gaming entry. One for TCP and one for UDP both using port 32400.

It seemed to work for a brief period but now I can no longer find the server. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hey Trumpy81

I will connect to my Synology DS918+, then I go into Package Center, find Plex Media Server and then launch it. If I check the status on the NAS, it says its running, but when I go to my Apple TV or thru the web, and launch the Plex App, it has me log in, then it looks for the server and comes back with a message, Cannot find Kuhn918 (which is the name I gave my server). Hope this helps.

Thanks Trumpy81,

Good news bad news. I rebooted my router and stopped Plex, changed my security privileges so I can delete the preferences.xml file, then restarted the NAS and Plex. I was able to connect to my Plex Media Server via web but when I try to access it from my Apple TV, it could not find it. Just so I understand you correctly, my IP for the NAS is 192.168.1.143 but my Apple TV is 192.168.1.238. Is that okay?

When I look in the Synology Control Panel, Enable Firewall is NOT checked. underneath it, it has Enable Firewall Notifications checked but greyed out.

Yes, IPv6 is not checked and Secure Connections is set to Preferred.

What does that do? Will I have to delete the app on the Apple TV too?

One last question on the delete. Should I also delete the Plex Media Server Authorized device? Just leave my Safari?

Okay, done but not good. Now when I go back to launch Plex from the web, it cannot find the server.

So when I first installed the DS918+, it has 2 ethernet ports so I connected both to my gigaport switch. Then I ran into issues and someone told me they would have to be on 2 different subnets. The recommendation was just to only use 1 ethernet port so that’s what I did. I just one plugged one from my switch.

Would it make any difference if I unplug the ethernet cable from the back of the NAS? It is not connected to the switch but maybe it see something plugged in and is thrown off?

The other thing is the NAS is physically plugged in via ethernet cable to the switch, but AppleTV is connected via wifi.

NONE. The AppleTV works fine. Okay then I will uninstall PMS and then install the lower version you recommended.

It is a Cisco 24 port Unmanaged switch. Just plug and play. Nothing fancy.

I uninstalled and reinstalled and it worked like a champ on the web version. Does this mean I cannot update my PMS to newer versions?

Also worked on AppleTV. Thanks for all your help on this issue. I would still like to know if I should just leave this version as is and never upgrade. I will want to start a new thread tomorrow on setting up outside access.

Thanks for your advice. JK

Trumpy81,

It’s been 5 days and Plex is still working great. Thank you for all your help. I have one more question. I noticed that after I downgraded my Plex version, it seems like it is not recognizing all my movies. I can do the analyze option or scan my library and it only finds my 197 movies but I have 220 in my Movies folder. Is there some xml file it is reading from the past that is preventing it from seeing my new movies? Is there a file I can delete and have it read them all again? Any advice would be much appreciated.
