Cannot 'Fling' (Plex Companion) to iPad running Plexamp

Server Version#: 1.27.2.5929-a806c5905
Player Version#: 4.2.2 (plexamp iOS)

Hi,

I’ve been running Plexamp on my iPad in the living room connected to some speakers and when I’m in front of my desktop PC (windows 11, Version 1.48.2.3124-647ff031), I would like to control Plexamp while letting it run on my iPad. Now, when I go to the ‘Players’ button in the top corner, I do not see my iPad playing music. If, however, I go to the Plex app on my iPad and play music from there, then I can see and control that instance from either my desktop windows PC or my phone.

I saw that remote control support was added in Plexamp v 4.0 and also want to note that I have “Remote Control” and “Reconnect to Players” enabled in the Remote Control Settings, the “Use Remote Connection” setting has been left as disabled.

It’s a bummer because I really do like the more advanced controls in Plexamp! Though I do wonder why not just have those controls in the main Plex app and hide them behind some settings there…

Thanks for any help,
Richard

Do you have a “flat” network structure at home, i.e. all devices share the same address space and can “see” each other directly?
(hint: having several “router”-type devices and/or power-LAN bridges are indications of a fragmented network)

Is there a Plex Media server in your home network or is it located remotely?

Just a clarifying question … during playback with plexamp on the iPad …

Is the iPad visible on the list of players (but not the currently playing track) when viewed from your desktop PC?

Or is the iPad not even visible on the list of players?

Thanks for the follow up questions -

  • there is only one router (old airport express, about to be upgraded) for the entire network and everything is connecting over wifi / DHCP.
  • my plex server is running locally on a windows PC
  • both players on my PC and iphone can see the iPad ONLY if I run the Plex App. If I run the Plexamp App on my iPad, neither players can see it, and thereby cannot control the iPad.

related question for plex reps …

on the plex companion troubleshooting web page

at the bottom of the page there’s a link for a list of available controllable apps

http://server.local.ip.address:32400/clients

that link gives me a 401 unauthorized error message … the support page is dated early 2019, so maybe the link for the list of controllable apps is no longer usable?

a similar/updated link might be useful for troubleshooting basic flinging/companion issues

Try appending an x-plex-token to that URL. Use a question mark in-between.

Do this only from within your home network.
Don’t post the complete command line publicly for anyone to see.
Don’t make screenshots which show the token.

I still get the 401 unauthorized message after appending the X-Plex-Token

Did you do it exactly as shown in the article?

http://server.local.ip.address:32400/clients?X-Plex-Token=YOURTOKENVALUEHERE

I tried it two ways, both with same result

…clients?X-Plex-Token=…
and
…clients/?X-Plex-Token=…

Hm. It still does work over here without the token. Probably because I allow unauthenticated access to the server from within my local network.
And I can see the Plexamp client as soon as it’s started.

Thanks for confirming … will try again later once I’m back on my home network

Thanks for the debug tips, I think I’m getting somewhere on this…

So for me, I had to use http://my.ip.address:32400/clients?X-Plex-Token=mytoken, and it indeed showed:

  • 0 MediaContainer elements when Plexamp was playing
  • 1 MediaContainer elements when Plex was playing

As a hunch, I rebooted my iPad and then ran just Plexamp - and now Flinging from my PC to the iPad works! And of course the /clients endpoint shows a MediaContainer elements for Plexamp on my iPad now… so perhaps there is some sort of ip conflict when both Plex and Plexamp are running on the same device?

As an aside, this makes me ask myself a similar question since I discovered Plexamp: why isn’t that functionality wrapped into the Plex app itself (or the other way around: Plexamp just supercedes all Plex things on the iPad)? It makes this quite cumbersome having to operate 3 different apps for my Plex media server from that device… whereas on desktop I just use one.

Thanks again,
Rich

Not sure what you mean.
The regular Plex app can be used as a casting target as well. Unless you need a feature that is unique to Plexamp, you should be able to use Plexamp on the desktop and cast to the regular Plex mobile app on the tablet.
And what “third app” are you referring to?
