Can't seem to get remote access to work - "Couldn't switch to new player."

Hi All,

Am running PMS v1.13.3.5223, and Plexamp v1.0.5. Both are running on the same iMac (v10.13.6 if that matters).

I can’t get remote access to work. I see the Plex instance running in Safari (tried Chrome too) in the Player menu in Plexamp, but whenever I try to select is, I get “Couldn’t switch to new player.”

I’ve tried removing the Plexamp device and re-adding it, and restarting PMS. Not sure what else I need to do to figure out why it won’t work. What logs are worth looking at for this issue?

  • Thanx!

Just to be clear, you can only control players on your LAN. You can remotely access media from a distant server

Hi Elan,

Thanks for the note.

Yeah, that’s what I’m trying to do - I’d like to use my iPad to control Plexamp - that’s not working yet, but I’m thinking that if I solve whatever is broken with Safari on my Mac, then perhaps it will then work on my iPad…

Both Plexamp and PMS are on the same iMac, and I can’t get it to work.

When I say “remote access” - maybe I’m using the wrong terminology… I want to control Plexamp from a device other than my iMac or the Plexamp interface… So “remote” means “using a different remote” in this case…

Ah yeah, that should work, as long as they’re on the same LAN. Sometimes wireless and wired networks end up NAT’d. What are the IPs of the Mac and iPad?

Hi Elan,

My iMac is internal IP address 10.0.1.8, and my iPad is at 10.0.1.19.

I just tried it on my iPad, and I get “Couldn’t switch to new player” when I do.

Any other ideas on how I can make my Plex client the remote controller for Plexamp?

Any help with this?

Are you using the Plex app on your Ipad or the web interface?
Are you able to control other players?

On my iPad, I’m running the Plex App Beta v5.1.

On my iMac desktop, it’s v1.13.3.5223

I don’t know of another player to try…

Try to disable the firewall on the Mac running the PMS and Plexamp

Done. Same error. “Couldn’t switch to new player.”

Hm.

  • Jon

Hum, I’m currently on a remote network to my PMS, running plexamp on Windows 10, and I’m able to control Plexamp using the Android plex app just fine.

Just to confirm it, you do see plexamp listed as a player on your Ipad right?

Hm. I can see my iPad in Plexamp under “Player” but not sure where to look on the iPad…

Thanks for your help, btw!

Aha!!!

Ok, I have success if I initiate it FROM my iPad. But not if I initiate it from Plexamp.

Wow!!! It WORKS!

  • Thanx

Ok, I think you are confused on what the player option in Plexamp does.
The player option in plexamp is for you to chose another player which will be controlled by plexamp, not the other way around.

GOTYA!

Yeah, I was definitely confused. Not a lot of info on it out there… I incorrectly thought that selecting a head end through that menu would DO something.

Psyched that I can now control Plexamp from my iPad. Rock and roll.

Ok, now I’m getting cocky. Can I use my Apple TV to control Plexamp too? I have Plex on there advertising as a player, but it doesn’t show up in the Plexamp Player menu…

  • Jon

Player = The client which plays the media

You keep getting confused about that.

To control plexamp you need to select it as a player on a different plex client that supports that feature.

Ok, so the Player menu in Plexamp shows me which players I can stream to - and control Plexamp from too, right? (I seem to be able to on my iPad). So I guess Apple TV isn’t supported as a Player since it’s not on the list?

Sorry if I’m still not getting it…

The player menu on Plexamp shows you the players you can control with plexamp, exactly the opposite of what you want to do.
