While installing Plex on a recently initialized QNAP NAS I can’t perform the operation. It stops after a while writing: PLEX MEDIA SERVER install failed due to the QTS firmware is not compatible, please upgrade QTS to 4.3.0 or newer version.
As written in title, the firmware actually is 4.3.6.0993
The NAS Server is equipped with an INTEL CELERON G540 CPU, RAM 12GB
I’ve also tried to install an older versione (PLEX PMS 1.15.4) and I’ve received the same error while installing. I suppose it is due to the latest 4.3.6.0993 firmware of QNAP.
Ok, but I can’t perform it now because I’m backing up the primary server to this one (I use this TS-870U-RP as a backup server); so I have to wait another couple of day before restarting it.
If I try to install this PMS 1.16 on the primary server where my main PLEX is working, could I ruin it or in case of installation failure the existing version remains untouched?
If you install the QPKG ‘PMSLibShare’ (written by a Plex Ninja), you will have a direct access to your Library data for easy backup.
You can do this manually if you wish by creating a shared folder which points to /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/PlexMediaServer/Library (adjust accordingly if you’ve migrated PMS to a different volume.
Creating a ZIP / Tar backup of it, when PMS has stopped, is the safest.
I am working on an updated package installer for QNAP.
Remember, whether updating or downgrading, do not uninstall, simply install the desired version on top of the existing for now.
Wow! Thank you so much for the valuable tips. I’ll give PMSLibShare a try but I’ll probably do it with the second option as I already have a share for .qpkg
Do I have to move Libray Folder only or Resources folder, too?
If I’d backup my Media folders in different named folders on the backup server should I perform a rescan and check every title of the whole library or does Plex recognize all titles albeit in different source folders?
Because I’m lead for the QTS work here, I am running 4.4.1.1031 on my TVS-1282
Except for the occasional issue, it’s good. PMS has been well behaved since the Virtual Switch bug was corrected. (This bug was causing my 10 GbE adapter to be declared offline).
IF you wish to, I would consider this version stable.
with performance in mind and fear of possible stuttering while viewing 4K MKV (native, not transcoded), with QNAP do you prefere to build a storage pool with many raid in it or build several raid each as single static volume?
I build it as a static, thick, volume. I have calculated the maximum size drives I ever expect to put in the NAS (14 TB x 8). The nearest higher size to support this is 127TB (setting inode size).
on TVS871 I still have a storage pool of 16 disks (I have an extension cabinet) but sometimes streaming with Oppo203 from PLEX a single stutter occurs and it bothers me. So I decided to try a different configuration on my backup machine (TS870): 3 single static RAID (as yours). If it works I’ll format the main QNAP (TVS871) as well. Thank you for your answer
When you’re done with the installation package, please let me know.
Hello @ChuckPa, as suggested I tried to reboot QNAP and reinstall Plex but suddenly it doesn’t work. It appears the same message as before: QTS is not compatible you have to install 4.3.0 or later version.
QNAP TS-870U-RP
Firmware 4.3.6.1040
CPU Intel® Celeron® CPU G540 @ 2.50 GHz
Memory 11875MB
Plex 1.16.4.1469-6d5612c2f
I’ve installed latest OFFICIAL QTS firmware (4.3.6.1040) and after that I succesfully installed Plex without problems. I copied LIBRARY folder from my QNAP TVS-871U-RP and replaced the one in this QNAP TS-870U-RP and launched a rescan of all libraries (after having deleted the old folder paths and replaced with the new ones). Now Plex on web shows all thumbnails and uPNP service is working perfectly as I can stream whatever I want through uPNP and PLEX via web works, too.
Thank you for your help and support.
It’s nice to hear 1040 worked for you, but it was so bad QNAP removed it a couple days ago.
I’m still stuck on it lol, and hoping for an update soon. At least it runs well for on my TS-451+
QNAP also had a nice article on the performance hit from various raid setups.
They show in an optimization article how to use dual SSDs as read/write cache,
plus dual SSDs as QTier cache in another raid config. When they said
snapshots can cause 25% performance hit, it made it easier to decide volume type.
Won’t those eliminate your stutters (assuming little transcoding and normal bitrate vid)?
I’ve installed 4 RAID in Static Volume (DVD, BD, 4K, Homes) and now I have no more problems. Playback is flawlessly, probably with Storage Pool slowest drives were detrimental for the whole pool.
Just for information, I have been able to install Plex with no issues - here is my info:
