Cannot open new server on ubunto VPS

Hello.

I’m fairly new to this.

I have opened a server on a windows based RDP (VPS), Now I have my ubuntu 18.4 VPS I have followed all the steps and installed plex on it, also opened port 32400 with SSH, now I went on my PC, went to IP:32400 and saw the plex interface, I logged in and the problem I did not get the option to open a new server :(, I have tried logging out opening a new account but same issue no option to start a new server, what am I doing wrong??

whenever a server is remote, and you are trying to set it up, you must use SSH tunnel.
This is Plex’s security mechanism protecting your server in event it ever becomes disconnected from your server. It falls back and relies on you logging into the server to regain control.

If using Linux/Mac, use this command,

ssh -L 8888:127.0.0.1:32400  ip.addr.of.server
  1. Sign in and let the session sit idle.
  2. In an incognito browser window, open http://127.0.0.1:8888/web
  3. Your local browser will go through the tunnel to the remote server. It will be like being on its console.

If you use putty (windows)

  1. The source port is 8888
  2. The destination port is 32400

Okie, I have opened the server :slight_smile:

But now another problem, I select a folder with movies inside type MVK and it dosent show them on the PLEX system

This is the folder I have tried to select it from the PLEX interface but seen only the Downloads folder, I selected it clicked on rescan but still nothing

These aren’t movies. These are TV show episodes.
They will get ignored if you try to add them into a ‘Movies’-type of library.

Have you ever operated a Plex server?
I recommend you to start with a local server. Learn the basics. Only then advance to a ‘hosted’ server.

I’m sorry for the missunderstanding, I tried adding them under TV - Shows

and yes I did use Plex server b4

I don’t see a folder which separates ‘movie’ from ‘tv show’ type of content.
Your tv show is also missing a Season 01 folder. (it doesn’t matter that there is currently no other season for this show.)

You should never let Plex look directly at a folder into which you are ‘downloading’.

And since this is Linux, I assume there is the old topic of access permissions as well. User plex needs at least ‘read’ permissions.
But @ChuckPa can tell you about this more expertly than I.

Adding to Otto’s advice above.

  1. make a directory to hold your finished “movies”
  2. make a directory to hold your finished “tv shows”
  3. after you’re done downloading/processing it, move it into the respective directory in proper plex structure. ( i will give details for this below)
  4. Point your movie library at /mnt2/movies (for example) which is local storage.
  5. Point your TV library at /mnt2/tv shows

Next come setting permissions.

This is very simple.

If the top directory is /mnt2, the following commands are all you need. Edit as appropriate.

find /mnt2 -type d -exec chmod 755 {} \;
find /mnt2 -type f -exec chmod 644 {} \;

you will retain full R/W rights and Plex will be able to read. done

Plex structure for movies:

Movie (year)/
  Movie (year).ext

Plex structure for Series:

  Series name/
    Season nn/
      Series name - SxxExx - optional title.ext
