Cannot playback New 4K Movie in Plex, all other 4K movies playback fine (Apple TV 4K)

I’m trying to playback a new movie I ripped Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom in UHD. The movie plays fine in VLC, but when I try to play it back in Plex, it tries for a few seconds and then comes up with an error: “Playback was terminated by the server Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error.”

Anyone know what is happening for just this one title? I’ve tried leaving the quality on “original” as well as “convert automatically” and it crashes with the same error on both settings.

I’m not running windows 10 - this is on a server 2016 machine. Does that change the entire post of yours? There is no hardware acceleration in this server, so there are no graphic drivers to update for any Plex reasons, are there? What do graphics drivers have to do with a server side host? The NICs in this server are in a team connection for 4GB of throughput. (four 1gb ports in a team)… perhaps that is not letting you see something you’re looking for, or is causing the confusion?

The last time I rebuilt plex (years ago) it took about 3 days to scan all my media… I’m really not looking forward to going without plex for 3 days again. I’ve got about 26TB of movies and TV, plus music and photos… it plays everything else fine - just this one film it will not playback. The playback of this same file with Emby works though, and the file can be previewed with VLC, so the file appears to be fine…

Please let me know with the new information I provided, if your course of action is still the only real test?

Thanks

Just to be clear - my plex media folder in my appdata subdirectory is about 36GB with over 275K files… that’s a lot of data to be removing - is that really the best option here? Will that be deleting anything useful?

The big thing I really don’t want to lose is which TV and Movie we have and have not watched… is there any way to preserve that data? With a library of this size, it’s a pretty critical feature for us.

You could set yourself up a free Trakt.tv account and install the plugin.
That way whatever happens even after a reinstall you will always get your watched status back.

OK so to try and make things more simple - I only added back a few categories like movies and TV, but the picture and music sharing with my family I didn’t setup yet. Turns out the error still presents itself IF I try to have subtitles enabled. I’m not sure I ever tried it without subtitles… so could there be a bug with the subtitles? We almost always watch movies with subtitles… Any ideas? Need a new log?

Edit: I just tried it on our Android Shield TV and it plays back with subtitles turned on… so is this specific to AppleTV 4K?

After some more time on this issue - I’ve found that ALL of my 4K movies (only 5 so far), suffer from turning on subtitles (internal). Turning on external SRT files seems to work fine (but external subtitles really are hit and miss it seems speaking in terms of quality). If I try to switch the video playback settings from original to “convert automatically” I get an instant stop as well. (Same transcoding error) If I switch to 1080P conversion, it plays properly, but buffers a lot of short bursts. PlexTranscoder.exe is only eating up about 45% CPU during the playback of 4K to 1080P conversion. Also, HDR is stripped off and everything is washed out during the 1080P playback.

Playing back a normal Bluray 1080P with internal subtitles only chews up 15-20% CPU - so the 4K is obviously more intensive on the CPU…

Any reason I’m unable to transcode 4K with subtitles via CPU? It’s running on a dual xeon E5-2620 v4 CPUs w/64GB of RAM… Does it absolutely require a dedicated graphics card? I’ve been utilizing the ASPEED graphics built in.

But like I said - Emby is able to transcode the 4K movies with subtitles, so maybe I have a setting wrong in Plex? I tried the “Use hardware acceleration” option both on and off without any difference.

Now the weird part is - when I use my Shield TV to play back my UHD movies, I can use internal subtitles, but there is no transcode.exe running while the movies are playing…? So the Shield must do something different since it’s overlaying text live time from an internal subtitle?

Is this a bug with transcoder on the Apple TV 4K? Or a UHD transcoder bug? Or … something else?

Is anyone working on this?
