Can't access media files, but I'm pretty sure permissions are correct

Server Version#:1.41.5.9626-72009626
DS920+ version DSM 7.2.2-72806 Update 4

To simplify this as much as possible, I put some MP3 files in a new share called PlexMedia.

I check the “Apply to this folder, sub-folders and files” box and click “Save” but it makes no difference.

I just can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. Any suggestions?

Did you put PlexMedia/plex-music on /volume1 or another volume?

Given it has the name, something else is going on with plex-music

I started by putting the MP3 files in subdirectory plex-music inside the shared folder PlexMedia, but when that didn’t work I moved the MP3 files up into the PlexMedia directory.

In Plex, for Music, your folder structure, file names and file tags are all very important.

Your folder structure and file names for The Beatles -1965 - Rubber Soul album should look like this:

PlexMedia/
    Music/
        The Beatles/
            The Beatles - 1965 - Rubber Soul/
                The Beatles - 01 - Drive My Car.mp3
The Beatles - 02 - Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown).mp3
                The Beatles - 03 - You Won't See Me.mp3
                The Beatles - 04 - Nowhere Man.mp3
                The Beatles - 05 - Think for Yourself.mp3
                The Beatles - 06 - The Word.mp3
                The Beatles - 07 - Michelle.mp3
                The Beatles - 08 - What Goes On.mp3
                The Beatles - 09 - Girl.mp3
                The Beatles - 10 - I'm Looking Through You.mp3
                The Beatles - 11 - In My Life.mp3
                The Beatles - 12 - Wait.mp3
                The Beatles - 13 - If I Needed Someone.mp3
                The Beatles - 14 - Run for Your Life.mp3
            The Beatles - 1966 - Revolver/
...

You also need to tag your .mp3 files using Mp3Tag which is a free Windows or Mac program, or any similar music tagging program.

I personally use Tag & Rename (Commercial).

Your tags should include the following tags, any other tags can be included, but Plex will not use them, Plex will only use the tags listed below:

Artist
Album Artist (Very Important!)
Album
Title
Year
Genre
Disc Number (if more than one disc for the album)
Track Number
Cover Art

Your file permissions should also be addressed, but so should the above!

How are you moving them? With FileStation or over the network on a SMB network mount?

I ask because SMB mounts can change the permissions

Can we try an experiment to confirm things are right?

  1. Use FileStation for all this work
  2. In FileStation, under PlexMedia, Create a MP3 folder
  3. Now highlight all the MP3 files, right-click ‘cut’ then click into the MP3 folder ( or just drag & drop
  4. Reapply the folder permissions to grant System Internal User PlexMediaServer permissions (apply to all)
  5. Edit the library section so it looks in the new location
  6. Scan for files again.
  7. Download the logs ZIP file and attach here

I originally moved the files in an SSH command line session.

I just followed the steps outlined in your message, and now the album shows up under Music!

So in the future, should I perform all file copies using FileStation to get them into Plex?

If you have a Windows PC, then go to DSM Control Panel > File Services and Enable SMB Service

Then in Windows File Explorer, under Network, your NAS should show up.

You can then use Windows File Explorer to transfer files to/from the NAS.

On a Mac, you can use Finder in a similar way, but the steps to set it up are a little different.

If you use Linux, then set up NFS and that will allow you to use the File Explorer to transfer files to/from the NAS.

Thank you for your help on this!

When I originally set up Plex, I used the “cp” command at the OS command line to copy the MP3 files over, and verified with “ls” that the files were in the right directory. I’m curious why this doesn’t work. Are there some additional attributes managed by FileStation that would have been bypassed by using “cp”?

CP alone cannot copy the file attributes/permissions, for that you also need to use chmod, but even then you may not set them correctly for the Synology NAS or Plex.

It is best to allow DSM to manage the permissions, which it will do when you use SMB/AFP/NFS to copy the files into a Shared folder on your NAS;
E.G. /volume1/PlexMedia

File Station will also preserve the attributes/permissions when moving files etc. on your NAS.

If you suspect file permissions are missing from your files, Plex does not see them for example, then use File Station > Properties > Permission tab etc… to correct them. Don’t forget to Apply to this folder, sub-folders and files when you do so.
