Can't add music to create library .. Help before I slam my head into the wall

I’ve tried to search for an answer to no avail.

Just set up Plex on my Synology 416play. Also subscribed to premium account. Trying to point the Music Library to the same folder iTunes points to. Plex has permissions on my Synology to that folder. Plex says it scans but then I get the dreaded “There are no items in this Library” error. I unchecked using embedded tags just in case. What the heck am I doing wrong???

I also tried to add from a separate music folder (not the default Synology one) with most of the same music that iTunes never points to. I was able to add two albums, but it would not handle the top level Music folder that has all the albums.

I find it hard to believe it has something to do with iTunes since they are just folders and files iTunes library (stored on my Mac) points to.

Please post your Plex Server logs so we can take a look at things.

Attached. Thank you so much. Feeling like a total noob.

Please remove the directories from your music library, add a directory that doesn’t have anything in it, and then do another scan. After that’s done, restart your Plex Server application, then add a single music directory back to your music library and do another scan. When that’s done, download the server logs again and post them.

By “music library” you mean the Library defined in Plex right? (which I already deleted but can attempt to create again to follow your instructions.)

Sorry to be dense. I don’t see “directories” under music library, but will add a directory on my NAS that is empty.

Here you go. At first I messed up the sequence, then …

I deleted the listed directories under Music/Edit Library/Share Folders. Added folder Musictest. Killed the Plex service on my Synology. Then added subdirectory for only one (beastie boys) album. Same response … “There are no items”.

Logs to review …

Please delete all music libraries from your Plex Server, then do the Plex Dance.

Except don’t create any new libraries. After you do that, please detail where you music folders are and how they are laid out (example follows):

d:\plex\music
d:\plex\music\deftones
d:\plex\music\deftones\adrenaline

How do “move all files for the show out of ‘sight’ of plex”? I can’t move my music folders/files. Can I do this by taking away the Plex servers permission to view the parent folder?

If you delete the music library, you don’t have to move any files around at all. Delete the entire library, then perform the Plex Dance.

Tell you what … I’m also going to move those folder (via iTunes so my library stays synced to it) to my root Music folder on synology. Just need to wait until I finish encoding all these video files. Stay tuned~!

While we’re waiting … I was checking the description for Adding Music Media and it suggests adding files like this:

/Music
/Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
01 - Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V).m4a

My (Apple) music files are organized like:

/music
/music/Apple Music
/music/Apple Music/Frank Sinatra
/music/Apple Music/Frank Sinatra/Nothing But the Best
/music/Apple Music/Frank Sinatra/Nothing But the Best/01 My Way.m4p

I think the m4p format is what messed it up. Combined with the other steps you gave me, it seems now Plex is building a library based on my mp3 store of the same media files. I’ll let you know if it’s able to finish without a problem. Thanks!

That setup is fine, just point the Plex Server to the /Apple Music/ directory as the root, instead of /music/.

If there is any DRM in the m4p files, then Plex can’t add them.

That seemed to be working BUT … should it take a really long time just to create a library with a bunch of file pointers? It almost seemed like it was duplicating the files if only based on how much time it was taking.

I don’t know what you mean by a really long time. Plex does not create or copy files, but it can and does take time to scan through each song, look at embedded metadata, look online and attempt to match, etc.

No worries. So far I"m pretty impressed, especially by your fantastically responsive support. Merry Christmas!
