Hi, I have a problem that didn’t exist before. A few days ago, I was able to change the scanner of a library to Plex Movie Scanner without any issues, and I could also rate movies and write reviews or comments directly from the Plex interface.
However, now I can’t do either of those things:
- When I try to change the scanner in an existing library, I select Plex Movie Scanner, but the change doesn’t save — it stays the same.
- And the strangest part: it still lets me rate movies, but I can no longer add reviews or written comments.
All of this was working perfectly just a few days ago. I haven’t changed anything important — I’ve just installed updates as they came out — and I don’t understand what happened.
Does anyone know why this might be happening or how to fix it?
Thanks.
Which agent name is now selected in the properties of the library, on the Advanced tab?
If it’s anything but “Plex Movie” (without any “(Legacy)” appended!) then you have managed to convert your library to use one of the deprecated legacy agents. And these do not support many of the newer features, like reviews or the watchlist etc.
Thank you for your response, OttoKerner.
The strange thing is that I’m not using any Legacy agent. Until very recently, my library was properly configured with Plex Movie Scanner and Plex Movie (no “Legacy” in the name) as the agent. In fact, I was able to rate and write reviews without any issues up until just a few days ago.
However, after one of the latest updates, Plex seems to have automatically changed the agent or stopped recognizing it as valid, and since then:
- I can no longer switch back to Plex Movie Scanner, even though it was set before.
- I’m still able to rate movies, but I can no longer add written reviews, which I was doing regularly.
I’ve restarted the server, checked permissions, and reviewed everything in the Advanced tab, but the behavior has clearly changed without any input on my part.
Is it possible that a recent update forced some kind of conversion or is now blocking features even for libraries that were correctly using the current agent?
Thank you in advance for any help or clarification.
So what is it showing now?
I’m trying to change from Plex Movie to Plex movie scanner, but it never changes, is impossible
Change the agent, not the scanner.
It doesn’t matter, always says: “Your changes could not be saved.” when I tried to save the changes. My objective is Scanner: plex movie scanner and Agent: Plex Movie. But is not possible to be saved when I choose those things, in this moment it says plex movie in both things.
That’s how it’s supposed to be. Don’t change it to anything else.
I was under the impression that the correct setup should be Plex Movie Scanner as the scanner and Plex Movie as the agent. That’s exactly how I had it configured, and I was able to write reviews without any problem until just a few days ago.
So now I’m wondering: if both the scanner and agent are set to Plex Movie, why can’t I write reviews anymore like I used to?
Thanks again for your help.

On the same property page as the agent, further down is a checkbox “Allow matching to explicit content”.
If it’s currently checked, clear it. Save Changes.
Then wait until the server activity subsides.
Reload the web page and Refresh Metadata of an affected movie.
Do you have any 3rd-party firewalls, anti virus software, or “internet filters” in your home network, on your router, or on your Plex server?
Does your ISP provide any kind of internet filtering, or an advanced firewall service? And if so, is it activated?
Try setting the “DNS server” network setting of your server machine to 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1
Then reboot and try again.
If that still doesn’t change anything, try and use the Plex database repair .bat file.
(stop Plex server using its task tray icon beforehand)
If that still doesn’t make a difference, try this:
- stop Plex server
- locate the
Codecs folder inside the plex data folder. Remove all subfolders it contains, but leave the file .device-id in place.
- start Plex server and wait about 5 minutes
- then try again
thank you for all your help, I’ll try that and I’ll tell you how is it going.
Regards
Just wanted to give you an update — the issue with ratings and reviews is now resolved, and everything is working perfectly in that regard. Thanks so much for the guidance.
However, the problem with the scanner setting not saving still persists. I’m still unable to switch back to Plex Movie Scanner in an existing library — the change simply won’t stick.
Thanks again, Otto, for all your help so far!
What are you attempting to accomplish by reverting to the legacy “Plex Movie Scanner” scanner? It can only be paired with the “Plex Movie (Legacy)” agent. Attempts to use it with the “Plex Movie” agent will result in the inability to save settings, such as what you’re seeing.
If you’re going to use “Plex Movie” as your agent, you have to use “Plex Movie” as the scanner. The scanners and agents cannot be mixed and matched without regard to their heritage (legacy vs. modern).
Thanks for your reply, pshanew.
The thing is, I was actually told that I should be using “Plex Movie Scanner” with the “Plex Movie” agent — and that this was likely the cause of why I wasn’t able to rate movies, write reviews, or even get search results when trying to match titles.
So based on that, I tried switching the scanner back to “Plex Movie Scanner” with “Plex Movie” as the agent… but it wouldn’t save the change. I now understand why — thanks for the clarification. It makes sense that these can’t be mixed across legacy and modern.
Everything is now working fine with Plex Movie / Plex Movie (scanner and agent both the same). I really appreciate the explanation.
