Can't claim plex server

Server Version#:1.32.8.7639-7000
Player Version#:app.plex.tv
I’ve been messing with a Plex Server installation on a Synology nas for a few days, I can’t claim the server. If I install it “Normally” the installation goes fine, but I can’t subsequently claim the server, either from IP:32400/web or app.plex.tv or apps on mobile devices. And if I run a Token installation it stops and says there are problems with some network filter or login. I have also tried logging in via Apps from mobile and tablet, there I can both see the server and play from the media library but not claim the server, if I log in to the browser with ip:32400/web I can only see the library folders but not movies etc and if I log in with app.plex.tv I can’t see the server at all.
I have tried to run a script from GitHub that should solve the problem, both as admin and root, but it takes a few minutes under the point “Getting User Token from Plex.tv” and then gives up, I also did an IPconfig, and I now my username and password are correct

.

As the error states, It can’t authenticate with Plex.tv

You’re certain the password you entered is correct for the account you’re using
-and-
that the Syno can communicate with Plex.tv (DNS and gateway addresses correct) ?

If we can agree that it is the password that I have created inside IP:32400/web in the Account menu. I originally created the Plex account with Google login but have added email and password in IP:32400/web Account.
Network wise I’m a bit more unsure but I can play the trailers plex has for other movies when I go into IP:32400/web and I can play my own movies from my media library when I open a plex app on my tablet. and on the tablet I also get offered to Claim to the server, the Claim bottom just dont do anything when I have pressed the button, in addition to spinning a wheel for 30-40 seconds.

I don’t know how Google authentication (Federated) works.
If that’s what’s happening here then I have a good idea why the basic tool is failing.

First, any IP address in the “Private” range is safe to publish in the open forum.
Private = 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, and 172.16.x.x → 172.31.x.x
(This is defined by RFC-1918 “Private Network” specification)

For Plex to claim, a few things are needed.

  1. Your computer/device are on the same subnet
  2. You cannot be addressing it with a host/domain name (e.g. “plex.mydomain.com”)
  3. The Syno must have a working DNS which can lookup the address of plex.tv
    – If there’s a problem, we can manually set Google DNS in the Control Panel
  4. The Syno must be pointed correctly to the modem/router gateway IP and
Control Panel for the primary ethernet adapter must mark as “Use as Default Gateway”)

The best way I know to complete the claiming is to get into the machine and authenticate at the http/socket level with a hand-crafted URL and a claim token.

Hi ChuckPa
Thanks for the answer.
I’m sitting and playing with the installation on a ship in the North Atlantic (my workplace), so my online time is limited, as we don’t always have internet.

  1. I know that both Nas and PC are on the same subnet. (10.236.xxx.xxx:255.255.254.000).
  2. When I access the server I use IP:32400/web and if I want to see if it works I use app.plex.tv
  3. If I can get the plex page up on app.plex.tv, does the DNS work? (and I can, it just can’t see the server)
  4. I’m a bit unsure if the Nas server can see the internet, it’s not an installation I’ve set up and I can’t see any packages in the package center on DMS, we have some access control on our internet, I installed Plex manually. Do you know if you can see anywhere if the Nas is online? But it has downloaded some of the film covers in my media library, so it is probably online

If the Syno can’t see the contents of package center (Synology app store) then there’s a problem.

It needs DNS lookup service just as Plex does.
Since we’re chatting here, the DNS settings for your computer work fine.

This could be something as simple as DNS for the Synology isn’t configured.
It makes sense this is the problem given you can’t see any packages in Package Center either.

If you have access to the Control Panel of the Syno.

Here is a screenshot of what you’re looking for (Control Panel - General)

When you look at it, its network configuration should match the configuration of your computer (or be REALLY close). DNS and Gateway should be the same since you both are on the same ship together.

Hi ChuckPa
It looks like it works now, the problem was our closed network, where everyone must be registered with a mac address to enter the network, they had created an “un-registered” user for devices that cannot log in, for example our Synology, and there they had blocked HTTP and HTTPS but allowed DNS, So I just had to allow HTTP and HTTPS for a short moment, also the Claim Plex server, and then turn it off again. And now it seems to be working.
Super thanks for the help, I really appreciate it after 4 days of effort to get it working

Hello ChuckPa
Well it looks like I can’t just turn HTTP and HTTPS off again when I have Claim the server, about 24 hours later it wants me to claim again, do you know if there is a fix so it doesn’t have to be online when I have claim it.
