Can't edit or create libraries, metadata agents unavailable

I made some changes while I could.

It looks like it’s doing it again, but that might be because it’s grinding away at the rebuild. I even turned off Sonic Analysis in the majority of the music libraries. I’ll turn it back on again after it’s all finished…if I can. Remains to be seen.

When rebuilding whole libraries, you should disable all analysis during addition of items. Otherwise it just takes too long before everything has settled and you can start weeding out mismatches etc.

Yeah, I would – I hadn’t turned off detect intros/credits, but the numbers involved are fairly low – but it seems that ship has sailed, as the installation is back to doing the same damn thing again. I can’t access the edit functions because the language dropdown has again stopped working. This is absolutely frustrating and aggravating.

Worse yet, I now can’t get plex to open the browser interface on this computer – I get a “this site can’t be reached” error. The interface opens just fine using app.plex.tv in Safari on the iPad, though the edit functions are disabled there too (and the Mac server is again offline because it’s perennially ridiculously awful software that goes stealth whenever it updates.)

I’m getting very tired of this, Otto. I’m old and I’m cranky and I don’t have the life expectancy anymore to be spending hours at a time troubleshooting this enshittified thing.

Is there any 3rd-party anti-virus software in use?
Which type of web browser are you using? Have you tried a different one?

No third party AV – I switched to Windows Defender a while back as Avast was getting worse at speed. As far as I can tell Plex is whitelisted there.

I’ll try with Chrome. I’ve been using Brave for several months.

Solved it, sort of. http://127.0.0.1:32400/web/index.html isn’t working any longer – “refuses to connect” is the message. Both Brave and Chrome.

It finally occurred to me to do what I do with Safari on the iPad – I use http://app.plex.tv there. I also remembered that this has happened before, at intervals, though usually there the corrective was opening the browser interface using the tray app, then bookmarking that.

No idea why this happened, as it was perfectly normal yesterday morning after the reinstallation fandango.

Anyway, we’re rather sadly back to this:

Logs for tax. No idea if they’ll tell you anything.

I wonder:
If you go into the settings of Windows Defender, and add the folder
C:\Users\wylde\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\ to the list of exceptions where Defender shall not interfere.
Does the issue go away after a reboot?

It’s worth a try, I guess, given that right now I can’t even get anything to play.

Plex already has a tunnel through my VPN.

Hmm, just got “error Code S1001 (Network)” trying to play a video.

Didn’t make a difference. Still no playback, no edit capability.

I’m stumped.

I’m going to try a Hail Mary here and install the 32 bit version again.

Installed 32 bit version, got edit back, and got playback restored.

Now remote access won’t work.

Edit: Gave the 32 bit app a tunnel, seems to work now. Adding logs FYI.

Spoke too soon. Remote access is gone again. Going to reboot and see what happens.

Got remote access back. Edit is gone again.

I’m ready to scream.

Remote access went again. Conformed port to forwarded port in router (my bad on that one.) Edit still fails.

The travail continues. Installed the 64 bit version again. Got edit back for a bit, so went through and changed some settings. Rebooted…lost edit yet again. This is supremely frustrating.

In an odd twist, while it’s lost the old On Deck for this server, it’s retained progress for various shows and movies despite the rebuild. I just have to go into each entry to carry on.

Plex doesn’t play well with VPN. if you disable your VPN, it should work, at least that has been my experience. Whenever I need to edit those libraries, I have to disable VPN and re-enable once done.

That would be pretty ridiculous, but this is Plex we’re talking about. So, huh, hey, make yourself vulnerable so you can tinker with stuff?

Plex has a tunnel through my VPN, and disabling the VPN has not affected this at all. Keeping in mind that the nuke and pave of the Plex installation on this computer saw the library creation/edit functions working fine for a time…and then not. And then working fine again when I downgraded to the x86 version and then not, only to work again when I upgraded back to the x64 version…until they didn’t.

I’ve seen this behaviour before from Plex even with a vpn nowhere in sight.

Also, edit functions for the other server work fine remotely, going from Plex on the Windows PC.

I’m basically just throwing up my hands at this point. I figure it’ll sort itself out by way of setting up a new PC, or if I take enough drugs that I stop caring.
