Not sure what to do. My free version of plex seems to still be working when I look for and play movies using my ROKU app. But when I try to log onto the server on my own machine where plex is running (http://192.168.1.5:32400/web) I can’t log in, it doesn’t recognize my password (which I’m sure is right), and when I try the “forgot password link”, the instructions never come. What should I do?
PMS version? 1.29/1.30/1.31/etc
Platform? Windows/Linux/Docker/etc
Unclaim / reclaim your server.

My bad! It’s a windows 10, 64 bit desktop machine, and the plex server version is pretty old, 4.30.2. Thanks for the links. I’ll look into them, but first let me mention that for some reason after about 3 tries the server let me log in with my usual credentials. When I couldn’t log in at first, I remembered your email back around August I think saying there was a data breech, and advising a change in password. I ignored it, and thought maybe that was the reason I couldn’t log in.
I don’t mind altering registry settings so I’ll try that if it happens again. But considering how old my version is, maybe I should update it before tweaking registry values. ![]()
Finally, even though I did finally log in, I’d still like to change my password, and am not sure I understand why the “forgot password” link never resulted in an email with instructions for a password reset? Could this have to do with the data breech? Is it possible despite finally logging in to my web server, that the PLEX company somehow no longer has my email address on file? If so, what can i do about that?
Thanks, and have a great Holiday season!
If you are successfully logged in, you won’t need the “forgot password” link, nor need you to wait for an email.
Simply go here https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/account to “Password”
Don’t forget to tick the checkbox to sign out all devices.
But before you do that, go to Settings - Server - General
and sign out your server from your account.
This makes it easier to reclaim it after you changed the password.
You know, this is getting strange! I’ve been to that page in settings (settings/account) and the password field said “not set”. I also did see I have one of my GOOGLE accounts linked. Can’t tell which one, but I assume its the one linked to the email address (which does show up in my account). But now I’m not sure why my browser’s saved password finally worked. Now I wonder if I “signed in with Google” from the beginning when I first installed the server almost 3 years ago. And by the way, now that I’ve signed out I’m back to the same situation I started with yesterday… Once again it won’t accept my email and browser stored password (even if I manually type it), and again the “forgot password” doesn’t result in an email.
If its anything like last night, I guess it will probably let me log in eventually. But maybe I should leave this along till after the Holidays. The app on my ROKU is still able to connect and see/play all my movies, and we’ll probably want to watch a few over the weekend. Maybe its not a good time for me to take chances that could make things worse?
You are right. There is no password, so you can actually only sign in using your Google credentials.
Resetting the password will add a regular password to your plex account, which may be not what you want.
Just keep in mind to always pick “Sign in with Google”.
You might want to go through the list of authenticated devices
On those which you recognize, perform “sign out” and “sign in” (directly on the device), so they each get a fresh authentication token.
Delete the rest https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/devices/all
OK thanks, that works. But one last question… if I do decide to go premium, so I can watch from other non-home locations, shouldn’t I have my own account credentials separate from GOOGLE?
No, the Plex account is still separate from your Google account. You are just authenticating yourself using Google.
If you get a Plex Pass, it is linked to your Plex account – not to your Gmail address.
You can add other authentication sites (or a regular password) and remove the link to Google and you will still retain the Plex Pass on your Plex account.
