Can't log into the Plex website or claim my Server on my iMac (running OS 12.1)

Server Version#: 1.25.4.5426
iMac OS: 12.1

Hello,
I’ve been a Plex user for years but I’ve been having a recent issue where my Plex server wasn’t showing up on my devices. When I opened the server on my iMac and on “General” saw a message next to my Version number (which was then 1.25.2.5319) “Something went wrong. Please install manually.” That linked to Media Server Downloads | Plex Media Server for Windows, Mac, Linux, FreeBSD and More, however when I opened that link using Chrome (version 97.0.4692.99), the downloads page would load, but without the download version picker and just the message “Ooops, looks like we can’t retrieve downloads at this time.”
When I tried to sign into the website, I’d enter my credentials (either email address or username) and password, but would get an error message “There was a problem signing into Plex.” This behavior happened on my Mac on Chrome (latest), Firefox (latest) and Safari (latest). I’m not using a VPN and getting good speeds. This behavior continued after a computer restart.
I was able to use a different Mac to get to the downloads page and get the most recent Mac server install zip. I uninstalled Plex (following the uninstall directions) and restarted my Mac and then installed the latest Mac Plex Server Version (1.25.4.5426).
I am still unable to log into the Plex website on any browser of my iMac and on my server page I’m still getting that “Something went wrong. Please install manually” message under General. I tried “Switch User”, to see if that had anything effect, but now my server is unclaimed and nothing happens when I click the “Claim Server” button.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello,
I’m still unable to sign into the Plex site on any browsers on my iMac (just loads a blank SignIn window) or sign into the Plex Media Server or claim my server. It has been 3 weeks and I still haven’t gotten any help or support with this issue.

Plex Mac Media Server Version: PlexMediaServer-1.25.5.5492-12f6b8c83-x86_64.zip
iMac OS: Monterey Version 12.2.1
iMac Chrome Version: 98.0.4758.80
iMac Firefox Version: 97.0
iMac Safari Version: 15.3

I can sign into the Plex site on my MacBookPro, but that isn’t where my Libraries are.

I’ve installed fresh Chrome and Firefox browers and the latest Mac Plex Media Server version on the iMac and am still getting these errors.

I’ve attached screengrabs and my most recent logs.

Plex Media Server Logs_2022-02-11_13-49-29.zip (2.3 MB)

I’d really appreciate some support.

is chrome set to allow third party cookies from plex.tv

Chrome settings>Security & Privacy>Cookies & other Site Data> scroll down to Sites that can always use cookies and add [*].plex.tv

just noticed you mentioned it happened in SafarI as well, so thinking you may have an entry in your hosts file blocking plex on that computer which may be why it can be accessed from another.

Hi BigWheel,
So I tried to add [*]plex.tv in Chrome, but got an error message “Not a valid web address.”

I looked up my hosts file and there are a number of plex-related entries:

Host Database

localhost is used to configure the loopback interface

when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.

Should I add a # at the start of each of those plex lines? If my host file is currently blocking Plex I have no idea how/why that happened. Plex was working fine for me a month ago…

Thanks,
armepater

Did you add all that to the host file or did some app? I would just remove them. IP addresses are not static and will change at times

I never touched the hosts file and aren’t sure how those Plex entries made it there. I reset the host file to default, following the instructions here and after a restart was able to log into the Plex website, sign into my Plex Media Server app, and reclaim my server.
I’m updating my Libraries, but fingers crossed that the hosts file was the issue.

Thanks for the help.

Hiya, can you help me please BigWheel? Im having trouble accessing my server settings on plex.tv. it says its unable to connect to my shield securely. Happens on & off a lot.

@DWH30 I reset your cert. you might have to restart your shield

Thanks so much! It fixed now.

Hi Bigwheel, its done it again. Is there any chance you could reset it again? Also, do you have any idea why it keeps doing it? Thanks so much!

done @DWH30 . I’m not sure why it would be asking for a new cert so few days after getting a new one. Would probably need to see the server logs.

Hiya, sorry about the late reply. I’ve never done this before so Im not sure how to give you my logs?

Hi BigWheel, sorry to be a pain. Im still trying to log into plex.tv & it says its unable to connect to my Shield securely. It really does do it a lot. Over the years I used to just factory reset my Shield but it takes hours to set up Plex again. Could you help me again please?

just get the zip file from your servers troubleshooting settings and drag and drop in reply window. yuo can click on my username/avatar to message it to me if you don’t care to post it publicly

@DWH30 hey. the most recent logs you sent with debug enabled show the server fine but after a restart the cert goes missing.

Did you move the server data folder to an external drive or anything like that?

Hiya, no I havent touched anything at all. What are you thinking, can it be fixed? Its not letting me in again, connection is insecure again.

I just reset it again. so should be fine after a restart but still not sure what is causing it. Out side of me telling you to restart after i reset cert are you restarting the device daily or anything?

Have you updated your shield with latest firmware that was released recently?

I only restart it if it crashes etc but yeah I restart it at least once a day. Yeah im on the latest firmware.
