I am a lifetime member on Plex and for years I’ve struggled to make this system work on Ubuntu. The support is convoluted at best and often times useless. I get Plex working and then it just stops or crashes or some videos that were working one day stop working.
This is TOO much work and I don’t think it’s really a viable application, in its current form, for everyday use. My computer has everything to make this work but after years of screwing around with this application and to have it fail randomly is just too much. I can no longer recommend Plex Media Server.

I can probably get you up, running, and stable.
I’m not sure, given your frustration, if you wish to continue that or not. I see the forum has your last original post as of 2018. A great deal has changed since then.
I’ve been here in the forum , providing support wherever and whenever needed. Just asking in a “server-linux” tagged forum will always get my attention (I see every post)
May I see a df
of how the file system is laid out? I don’t much need to know the lshw
listing. How you wish you use the local resources for media doesn’t concern me as much as your system /
partition and the amount of space you have to work there.
Did you install directly from Plex.tv/downloads or did you install via the ubuntu store?
As secondary post due to it’s importance ,
I spotted your server certificate was questionable since it was created prior to October first (new root certificates took over).
I have reset it.
Please restart the server.

I just ran the following:
sudo systemctl restart plexmediaserver.service
Now when I connect to my server using plex.tv, this message appears: app.plex.tv is unable to connect to “linux-box” securely
This all was working and now it’s not. I can connect directly with my server if I use http://192.168.xx.xx:32400/web/index.html - but that’s not useful on my other media devices. No, none of my other permissions have changed.
What do you see under Settings → remote access ?
@bit.shifter52_gmail.com
Would you now please do the following:
Stop Plex
Wait 1 minute
Start Plex
Wait 2 minutes
as root - make a tar.gz of /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Logs
Attach that tar.gz
@bit.shifter52_gmail.com
Your server is running and transcoding with the Nvidia perfectly.
What I’m seeing is the FireFox player choke.

Note it is using the Nvidia.
PMS starts sending the stream.
Next I see is the start of another playback (Didn’t it start in your browser???)
Do you have another browser or playback device ?
Okay, I just started Plex in Google Chrome and this is the message when I try to access media setup on my server:
app.plex.tv is unable to connect to “linux-box” securely
I receive the same error message using Vivaldi.

I just looked at Plex.tv.
It has not had any contact with your server in 5 hours.
Back to basics networking –
The host adapter in use is enp4s0 (192.168.50.53)
You are accessing it from the same 192.168.50.x subnet ?
When you SSH into the host, can it ping www.google.com ?
ping www.google.com

I just tried to use my Plex link on my LG Smart TV and it says it cannot connect to PMS.
I can see my media files via localhost: http://localhost:32400/web/index.html#!/media/6747a8ad1e1f6a8637512459ca79a26ed3e97939/com.plexapp.plugins.library?source=2
But they only play randomly in my browser. When I go directly to any on the media with my file browser it all plays correctly.

LG? Is your TV one of the models impacted here?
UPDATE: It appears that all Tizen-based Samsung sets are likely affected by the cert change and will thus need the app and server configured to allow insecure connections.
On September 30, 2021, some older smart TVs (some Samsung, LG, Vizio, Hisense, and other unsupported TV platforms) will no longer be able to use secure connections to communicate with Plex Media Servers. These devices are no longer supported by their manufacturers, and won’t be receiving an update needed to continue making se…
The LG TV was manufactured January, 2019 so it isn’t that old. Also, Plex no longer works with either of my Roku devices which are not that old.
So here’s my situation: Plex doesn’t work on my computer, TV or Roku devices. Like I said in my initial post, Plex doesn’t seem to be a viable application. I have tried for years to make this work but even when I do get it working, it eventually crashes for no apparent reason.
So unless you can tell me how to fix this error message: ‘app.plex.tv is unable to connect to “linux-box” securely’, I see no reason to continue with it.
Your SSL certificates are messed up. Make sure ‘Secure connections’ is set to “Required” under ‘Settings - Network’ in the web app and then if it is still not connecting remove the server from ‘Authorized Devices’ in the web app and then sign the server back into your account.
If Secure connections is not set to required then app.plex.tv WILL NOT WORK. You will have to log into the web app locally using the IP address of your server to change this setting. Once you do the above and get app.plex.tv working THEN come back here and reply to me.
