Can't login on iOS version 12.5.7 anymore since plex website updated

Hello. I have an iPad Air 1. The latest iOS version supported is iOS version 12.5.7. Since some months back it’s not possible to login to plex web to authorise the account for Plex app or stream on the website.
I got logged out of my player and can’t login again. The website that I get directed to where I’m supposed to enter my credentials doesn’t render.

I hope there is a solution for these older iPads since it works perfectly to stream on.

No help from Plex? Seems like a waste that a perfectly functioning iPad can’t be of use.

Please fix the website so that it’s possible to login with an older browser.

I have two iPads that I can’t use anymore. Please help.
Can you be of assistance @davebinm? Must be a lot of users who can’t login now.

I’m afraid not. I haven’t worked for Plex since June 2023, so not a lot I can do these days

Oh I see  So hard to reach them.

It’s probably a really easy fix that will make a lot of iPads work again. Come on Plex!

PLEX is it impossible to get in touch with you?

are you trying to log into plex web or the app? You logged into the forums here which is the same login system as web.

Hi @BigWheel, thanks for replying. I logged in to the forum on my computer.

On my iPad with iOS version 12.5.7 it’s not possible to login to plex.tv to activate the plex app, I also tried with the website directly and it didn’t work. There is something on the login page that is not supported by this older browser. It’s a shame because streaming worked really well on the iPad.

I got logged out of my player and can’t login again. The website that I get directed to where I’m supposed to enter my credentials doesn’t render, it’s just a blank page. I’ve tried it on two different iPads.

Our current iOS app only supports iOS version 14.5 or later so you must be running some older version.

It is possible that version of Safari on it is not supported either as it is likely old and doesn’t support modern security protocols needed to sign in securely. Do you know the version number of Safari on it?

Hi, yes it’s an older version of the player, both the plex app and the infuse app worked great.
There is most likely something with the browser. Could just be a rendering issue and not a security protocol problem. It worked fine until pretty recently. Hard to tell when you made the update because I noticed it when I got logged out.

It should be Mobile Safari 12.1.

I’m told we currently support Safari 13.1 and up

What’s the reason for that? It must have security enough to be able to pass on the login credentials to the app. I use these iPads for streaming plex, they work really well. I can’t buy two new ones just because the login doesn’t work.

It does not work with modern tools/tech the site is built with now.

@BigWheel I can understand that for streaming in the browser but for authentication of another app. Plex app, infuse app etc it doesn’t make sense.

I only want to be able to login so I can authenticate a perfectly functioning app.

@BigWheel What do you think? Is this something you could fix. Just so it’s possible to authenticate an app that is working for streaming.

Could try a different browser on the iPad like Firefox maybe and see if that helps?

You might try “disable content blockers” on Safari (and alternate browsers) as well - sometimes those can interfere with site rendering. How to Temporarily Disable Content Blockers in Safari for iOS - MacRumors

You could also try triggering “show desktop version” - sometimes that helps get around oddities: https://www.howtogeek.com/435173/how-to-view-a-desktop-site-on-mobile-safari/

It is disappointing when older equipment that still works isn’t supported anymore by some services but it’s just the nature of these things unfortunately. At that point you just have to fiddle with work arounds and such since the company isn’t going to change their stance on it.

You mention using Infuse. That should work since it’s unrelated to Plex as long as it can get to your folders where the media is stored. If you’re using the Infuse feature to connect to Plex via Plex - I can’t remember what it’s called, “Plex Connect” or something? - you might just have to setup the Infuse connection to those folders directly via network share. Infuse forums or their reddit (which is an official one I think) can probably help you out there so you can still use your older iPads to watch your videos, just wouldn’t be via Plex.

Just some options to try and work around things a bit maybe. I have an older iPad Air 2 which will likely be in the same boat in the near future myself so you made me think about it for my future self too.

Thanks for your suggestions, unfortunately other browsers dosen’t work on that iOS version since Safari is default. It works to play in Infuse through FTP, but that is less than ideal I’m afraid. That is my last resort.
My guess it is an easy fix, just allow it to login, no need to use the rest of the website. I only need the AUTH key.

I couldn’t remember when setting a new default browser became available and wasn’t sure if you could work around it by grabbing URL reference differently maybe or something. I was hoping some of the Safari mode changes would work around it in that case.

FTP seems like an odd option to use but obviously all just depends on your environment - if you’re remote to the server for example. If you are local to the server I’d say try using SMB\NFS shares instead for better experience maybe?

You could also try checking into Jellyfin as an alternative to Plex. Because of the nature of it’s setup and management you might find it works around the Plex issues and you can run both together actually. And you can get to older versions of software sometimes too.

A newer Infuse feature is to direct connect to Plex and Jellyfin so you get most of the Plex\Jellyfin layout and info in Infuse. Might be worth a look as well to use Infuse with Plex a bit more “Plex like” maybe: Streaming from Plex, Emby, and Jellyfin – Firecore Support

Good luck!
