Cant play a certain Video files

Cant play certain video files from my server to Nividia sheild & also my mobile phone locks up and freezes plex app…but can play that same video file fine from PC & roku device…

PMS Version & Platform?
Plex Client version on Shield?

Please provide Plex XML for one of the videos that does not play. Note: Forum does not permit attaching .xml files, so either zip or change to .txt before attaching.

Information regarding your setup would help. To what is Shield attached - TV, receiver, soundbar, etc. Make & model numbers, etc.

More information regarding “Can’t play” please. What happens when you try to play the video on the Shield?

Server Version#: Version 3.95.2
Player Version#: SHIELD Android TV 7.17.1.11064

sorry my server version is Version 1.16.1.1273

can happen if there is a compatibility issue with the video file type being transcoded.

It’s a mp4 …So is there a way to correct this issue… the video works fine w/plex playing on PC and Roku… I noticed while not using plex playing the video file on the PC using VLC player it doesn’t work but does work using Windows Media Player … I tried converting the video to MKV still has the same issue

such “compatibility issues” don’t stop at the file’s container.
you can investigate the media details from the movie’s pre-play screen ... > Get Info.
for full technical details, click View XML from that dialog – if you need further help you can copy/past that XML information (key information are in between the <Media>...</Media> marks).

Edit: support article on how to investigate media information and formats

MOD-Edit: Merging your duplicate post

The container, MP4 or MKV, won’t matter if the video or audio track is the issue.

When playing via Roku or on PC, what is displayed in the Dashboard? Plex Web → Status → Now Playing. Does the video & audio direct play, transcode, etc?

What is meant by “can’t play”? Can you get past the pre-play screen, does it endlessly buffer, do smoke & flame come out of the Shield?

In the Plex client on the Shield, set Display Information = On. If you can get past the pre-play screen, during playback, pull up the on-screen controls (pause the video or tap the bottom of the ring on the remote). Look in upper left corner of screen. You’ll see info regarding direct play / direct stream / transcode. What does it show?

I have the debug log I saved from the Nvidia Shield when i had the problem…I saved it to my email how can I post it…will that help ?

The log from the Plex client on the Shield, correct (as opposed to a log from the Shield itself)?

Save it as a .txt or .log and drag it to the message window. It will auto-attach where the cursor is located. You can also use the Upload icon, the one with the up arrow.

The Plex XML would also be helpful. Please send when you get a chance.

Thanks.

Here is the xml txt

XML.txt (3.2 KB)

here is the log

i get to the play screen but when i click to play video …icon continuosly spins…then plex reboots

Nothing stands out as bad with respect to the video or audio formats. The XML info looks fine. Plex is trying to direct play the TV show, there is no transcoding.

Two suggestions:

First, check the metadata in episode 4, Missing Missile.

There is a log entry: 06-27 08:57:12.089 i: [video] Starting Playback for: Episode 44

There is no episode 44 for season 1.

Second, suggest you rename files according to Plex standards.

Current:
M:\Dave's Cartoons\Touché Turtle and Dum Dum\Season 1\Watch Touchë Turtle - 04 - Missing Missile - Full Episode 4 FREE on Toon.is.mp4

Plex standard:
M:\Dave's Cartoons\Touché Turtle and Dum Dum\Season 01\Touché Turtle and Dum Dum - s01e04 - Missing Missile.mp4

See Naming and Organizing Your TV Show Files for additional info. Note the two digits for both season & episode numbers.

The above two items should affect matching against TheTVDB more than affecting playback. However, give it a try and see if it helps.

Other than that, I’m not sure.

Maybe somebody else can look at the logs & XML and find an issue.

I Rename and didn’t help I did all season one and then typed in each episode why would it play on Roku and also the PC but not on my phone or any Android device… me personally I think it’s the default video player that Nvidia Shield uses I can’t find a way to change that the default player on the Nvidia Shield… also on my PC the VLC player has a problem playing each episode shows green at the bottom of the screen but when I use my PC through Plex each episode works perfect don’t know what default player Plex uses on my PC

Also I noticed when I play an episode on my phone it starts to play the episode the first 5 seconds but then freezes and then I go to my dashboard in my Plex account and it shows it playing and the time is moving on the video but on my phone it’s frozen

You cannot. The Plex client on the Shield uses ExoPlayer2. There is no option to use a different player.

VLC can play almost anything. If VLC cannot play the video, then it might be a problem with the video itself.

This is what is throwing me for a loop.

Are you using Plex Web or the Plex Media Player application?

What does the status dashboard (Plex Web → Status) show when you play the video on your PC? Direct Play, Transcoding, etc

From Plex web while playing the video it says direct play on Audio and Video in dashboard when I try to play the video from Nvidia Shield …I get to play screen and everything but when I hit play it asked me to resume or start from the beginning and I hit start from the beginning spinning icon nothing shows up on the dashboard

Is there a way to set direct play in settings in Plex app from the Nvidia Shield
