iPhone Movies (.mov or converted mp4) do not play in Media Server

Server Version#: 1.20.4.3517-ab5e1197c / 4.43.4
Player Version#: Nvidia Shield PRO
I am a Plex Pass account user.
I have a Synology 1520+ NAS running Plex Media server.
I uploaded about 800 iPhone videos (.mov files) to a directory on my NAS.
I also made a seperate directory for them converted to MP4
I added them to the media servers by mapping an “other videos” library to that path on the NAS
The videos did not play correctly, most were choppy or froze, many just played in black and white.
In both the .mov and .mp4 formats all of these play PERFECTLY from my Mac via a mounted share on this NAS. The problem seems to be just with Plex

Help, i can post logs if needed.!?

The Nvidia Shield Pro app (Shield Experience 8.2, app version 8.8+) will play all the content direct play

The logs can be generated by:

  1. Verify DEBUG logging enabled (Settings - server - general - SHOW ADVANCED)
  2. Verify VERBOSE logging Disabled.
  3. Now recreate the playback attempt
  4. Stop after 20 seconds
  5. Wait another 20 for logs to flush to disk
  6. Settings - Server - Troubleshooting - Download Logs
  7. Attach the ZIP file

I am confused why the Shield is not doing as it should – DirectPlay (even with subtitles).

The DSx20+ series still require this bypass

THX!
I will get the logs ready and try what you suggest.

For clarity its not just the Nvidia shield Pro. The version of Plex Server on the DS-1520+ has the same problems playing these files.

Bypassing the iHD driver with the process you provided here works!
Thank you kindly!

Actually I may have spoken too soon, seems the Plex server on the NAS now plays them with out issue. The Plex client on Nvidia Shield Pro still has issues with many (but not all) of this files.

We made some good progress but I am still confused as to what is going on?

Show me what’s happening “Some progress” isn’t anything I can help with.

“Details” please

Summary for the playing of my “.mov” files in Plex.

Plex Media Server on my DS1520+ NAS now plays them fine (fixed as a result of your suggestion to bypass the iHD drive above)

Playing them in Plex Client on my Roku 4+ (on another TV). This device is slower than Nvidia to start playing but does play the media cleanly.

With Plex Client on my NVidia Shield Pro. Many of these media files play cleanly, but many do not. The files I see with issues appear to be the ones with more a “Portrait” orientation. The one I note here has a resolution of 1920x1080.

I have attached a copies of one that works and one that does for you to view here.

The issue for me right now appears to be confined to Plex on the NVidia shield pro.

What further details would you like?

You just provided one very important detail: App version. 7.23.0 ?

That’s prompted several more questions:

  1. What model year is that shield pro?
  2. Which version of Shield Experience is running ?

I have a 2019 Shield Pro which is running 8.2 and app version 8.9

  1. The Shield Pro is a 2019 model (purchased this year).
  2. The Shield experience ver is 8.2.1

So odd you have an app version of 8.9 as the app update function is telling me everything is up to date. I am considering clearing cache, clearing data, uninstalling and reinstalling the app.

Do you think that will help?

Uninstall/re-install and its updated to 8.9.2…

Did some checking and the issue still remains on the Nvidia Shield Pro device after this update to 8.9.

Went away for T-giving holiday and I am back now. Any thoughts ChuckPa?

Anything further on this issue?

Any ideas or am I stuck?

I am also experiencing this issue. But I think the issue is with Nvidia rather than Plex because it also happens in the Kodi player.

I also found this: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/shield-tv/9/409408/problems-with-specific-video-files-after-the-821-u/

Thanks for your post. You may have a good point.

The issue is now confined to just my Nividia shield which is actually a Plex client for me. So your suggestion is quite viable.

My Synology NAS is my Plex server and no longer has an issue. It was fixed via ChuckPa ihd driver recommendation above in the thread.

My other Plex clients such as Roku do not have the issue. I got the Shield for performance reasons and it was indeed quicker at rendering than my Roku but does still have this problem with this type of image.

Sorry for the delay.

I’ve been swamped with the DSM 7 packaging. ( NOT something to wish on anyone )

Which Nvidia Shield are you using?
I have the Shield 2019 Pro as the client and, frankly, it is the best client by far.
It’s head & shoulders above the rest. The player swallows HEVC HDR 59.94 Hz 2160p as DirectPlay and spits out perfectly tonemapped video to my 1080p TV with perfect audio into the Onkyo AVR

Understood and thanks for getting back to me:

  1. The Shield Pro is a 2019 model (purchased this year).
  2. The Shield experience is now updated to ver is 8.9.2

Thanks yet again Alsun2001… I will read this one too.

Thanks Trumpy81 I will try this.
