Can't Play Live TV

Server Version#: 1.21.3.4149
Player Version#: 8.16.2.24953

On my Pixel 3 I haven’t been able to play Live TV remotely. Only one channel will tune. I only have problems on the Android app. I’ve tried uninstalling app and re-installing and it doesn’t help.

At 2:33 am, I tried tuning ABC 2.1 which fails, then tuned Fox 11.1 which works, then CBS 5.1 which fails. The only channel that works is 11.1. Again it’s only on the Android app when I’m viewing remotely. If I’m home, everything will direct play fine. I also have “Limit Cellular Data” set to 2mbps and streaming brain limited to 6mbps upload. If I disable “limit Cellular Data” Live TV works as expected.

Logs are attached. This has been going on for a few updates now, don’t remember exactly how many updates, but can regress if needed to find out when it started. I believe around 8.14 but not positive.

I am having the same issue with my pixel 3 and the Android app.

I had downgraded to 8.12.4 to get Live TV to work again remotely using my android phone. I can’t believe no one else is having this problem…

Thanks for the info. I downgraded also and it is now working.

@anon18523487 Sorry to ping you and I know the Plex Team can’t view every post, but I want to make sure you are aware that Live TV has been broken on Android Mobile. I can provide further logs if needed. I tried 8.18 and still the same results.

Get the following error any time I try and play live TV remotely. If I turn off streaming brain, I can play Live TV again but it direct plays and my upload bandwidth isn’t good enough for that. If I “limit cellular data” in the app, it still direct plays so has no effect. If I lower the quality for “remote streaming quality” to anything less than the resolution I get the error, if I make the resolution the same (even though it’s less quality) it still direct plays.

I did a post back in July 2020 of basically the same issue which got closed out for inactivity and was never solved. Very frustrating!

Your logs show that the app is having trouble decoding the mp3 audio stream. Do you have any videos from your own server with mp3 audio? Curious if your device has issues with the mp3 audio. This is not the same as playing mp3 music. Needs to be an mp3 audio track in a video file.

Ok, I believe I found a movie that had mp3 audio and it played fine. Logs are attached. 05/22/21 @ 7:55 pm I started playing the file.

And to reiterate, It’s doing this while trying to playing Live TV. If I record the channel and then playback the recording, it’s fine. (Even shows ac3 MP3) for transcoding)

Let me know if you want me to try anything else, and thank you for the prompt response.

Can you get me a new log from Android and PMS at the same time while trying the live channel?

From your description of playing back the saved version, it sounds like the original is an ac3 audio stream and PMS might be having trouble transcoding that live to mp3, so when it gets to the Android client as mp3, it fails.

I stopped the server and restarted it at 11:20 pm. I tried playing channel 2.1 which is ABC which failed. I then played channel 11.1 which is the only channel that works as I mentioned in my first post.

First off, are you playing from a remote location? Your logs do show your server is behind DNSRebinding protection so local secured connections will not be possible. You may want to look into getting this resolved, which could help.

Next, I see that the stream was first attempted to be direct played but failed due to a bitrate restriction. This could be due to the issue above resulting in the stream using the remote quality setting instead of the local setting.

Thirdly, I see that the transcode is trying to use the H264 5.2 profile level. It’s possible your device is having issues with this. There is a setting in the Android app to set this. Try setting that lower one value at a time.

I am using Fresh Tomato 2021.2 for my router firmware. I will disable dns rebinding protection to see if that changes anything.

I’m assuming this has something to do with streaming brain. I set my “Internet Upload Limit” to 6mbps under remote access on the server config. I currently have very slow WISP home internet. By slow I’m talking 1990’s 8mbps down and 6mpbs up. This has been my only option for internet until this week, a company came in and is doing Fiber in our subdivision so I will be hopefully getting 200mbps down and 20 up within a month or 2. Yes, my issue in this post relates to transcoding live TV remotely on an android mobile client. I have no other issues on any other client locally or remotely. I use Plex for Windows, Roku’s, Plex on iOS, to name a few and again, no issues with playing Live TV remotely or locally.

With the Pixel 3 android client I tried backing down the h264 profile from 5.2 and it made no difference.

Basically, my only working solution has been to downgrade Plex Mobile to version #8.12.4, so something must have changed between 8.12 and 8.13 and up.

I am having the same issue, but call play the stream using Plex web on my pixel 2

@anon18523487 is this being looked at? Tried updating to beta Plex for Android 8.19.0.26026-beta and still have the same issue.

I was waiting to hear back if turning off DNS rebinding worked.

Sorry about that, it did not.

Can you get me a new log with the DNS rebinding off and the h264 profile set to 4.2.

At approx 2:00am I started playing channel 2.1 not realizing I was connected to wifi remotely. The remote streaming quality in the app was set to maximum and streaming brain is set to 6mbps upload and the video played.

I then turned off wifi and played the same channel on 4G with “limit cellular data” set to 1.5mbps and I got the error. Logs are attached.

Also If I turn streaming brain off it direct plays the file even though I have “limit cellular data” set to 1.5mbps

Do you have the PMS logs for that time period? It looks like the app did ask PMS to transcode the file but it had trouble playing back what it received.

I don’t see that in your log. It’s possible that what you are seeing is just a delay in the reporting. PMS may think it was going to direct play at first so that’s what it shows but then will change after a few seconds.

here is a log from 2am.

I believe the streaming brain thing was tried sometime after that. I can do it again and get new logs for that part if you want.

I am also still having this issue. In fact, it’s gotten worse as the browser will no longer stream/transcode OTA live TV.

Is this problem isolated to Pixel devices?
