Can't remote access to QNAP NAS using Port Forwarding

Server Version#: 1.25.4
Player Version#: 4.74.1

I was recently a target of the deadbolt ransomware attack which targeted QNAP NASes. As advised by many and QNAP itself, it is strongly recommended to disable UPnP. So I did.
From what I understand, the only real alternative to get a smooth Plex experience without UPnP is through port forwarding (VPN complicated and slow, Relay slow too) and that’s my problem…I can’t get it to work!

What I’ve done…

  • created a DHCP reservation for the NAS on my router. There too, the consensus is on this method for creating a unique IP address for the NAS, rather than setting a static IP address on the NAS directly.
  • Port forwarded 32400 to 32400 using TCP and the NAS IP address.
  • In Plex, set public port manually to 32400.

And this is what I get and no working remote access:

And here’s my router settings for port forwarding:

Additionally, I’m not behind a double NAT (my ISP’s router is in Bridged mode) and my WAN address is the same on the router as on the internet.
I’m on the latest versions of PMS, NAS & router too.

What could be wrong?
Thanks in advance!

There’s also a guide with some more details

A VPN will certainly complicate this

Thanks for your reply.
I had actually used that guide to setup the port forwarding so I’m aware of all those possible issues.
The only one I hadn’t looked into was whether my ISP had my IP set to private. I just checked, it’s public :frowning:
I’m out of ideas…this is so weird. It shouldn’t be this complicated.

OK…finally figured it out. I had been fooling around so much with the NAS and router settings these last few days to implement all the recommended security precautions I didn’t have in place, that it got a bit messed up.

I had the NAS’s DNS set to a static address that maybe came from a previous setting that I later disabled (probably fumbling around trying to setup a DDNS and failed and forgot about this).
I set it to automatic and all is now resolved!
Damn, networking can be so horribly complicated!
My advice to all newbies like me, make a note all the settings you change so you can back track and restore if necessary!
