Can't run or install on QTS 5.0 Beta

I just installed the new QTS 5.0 Beta and the Plex 1.21.1 server that had been installed will not run. I posted to the QNAP forums and noticed someone else had the same issue. I downloaded the 1.23.4.4712 version from the Plex site and attempted to do a manual install. That too failed.

Server Version#:1.21.1 and 1.23.4.4712

Not yet supporting QTS 5.0 BETA

Sorry.

I only got the 5.0 myself last week.

Have not had time to work it into the development cycle with Synology being released

HOWEVER — Don’t use PMS from the QNAP App Center … It is Too Old.

Download from Plex.tv/downloads.

@markand

Which version firmware do you have ?

I have

Basic playback is valid.

Plex Media Server v1.23.4.4712 will not install on the latest QNAP QTS firmware is 5.0.0.1716 (beta).

QTS throws an error to install indicating that PMS must be installed on QTS firmware <4.9.9.

I will make some (unsigned) packages locally to share.

Now that QNAP has released QTS 5.0 to BETA, I can begin working on official support.

Best you can try is to manually edit qpkg.conf and change the FW_Ver_Max
value until we have time to test internally.

Ok, I will try that tomorrow and report back.

Here:

If it runs then it does.
Nothing else can happen until I can build locally again.

@ChuckPa , I have 5.0.0.1716

How does one edit the file?

Oh, and thank you for the fast followup!

OFFICIAL DISCLAIMER OK ?

If You break it and need to reinstall QTS… I warned you… OK ? :smiling_imp:

  1. /etc/config/qpkg.conf

  2. find [PlexMediaServer]

  3. Edit the value of FW_Ver_Max to be = 5.9.9

  4. Save the file.

  5. Start Plex

It will allow what’s installed to run on QTS 5.0 beta

There are no guarantees of function or performance – QTS is BETA

Want to ride the wild software?

BETA packages for a BETA distro.

I cannot do more than this.

I need get QNAP on my schedule.

If works, please let QNAP know how accommodating I was ?

I too foolishly installed the Qnap beta OS.

I’ve tried to install the x86_64 version (TS-453be) above but it still fails unfortunately.

Same error “unable to install the package”…

Kind regards

Andy

@ChuckPa - I downloaded the 1.23.3.4743 build. Unfortunately the same error.

[App Center] Failed to install Plex Media Server. Try again later.

Can you go back to QTS 4 ?

(Manual firmware install)

EDIT:

I downgraded my development system to QTS 4.5 –

Normal operation restored.

No Muss, No Fuss.

Thank you! Good to know it can be done.

I’m sure it will be supported at some point in the future.

When the Firmware is stable… I’ll get it ready…

But —

  1. I have it running on a TS128A without issue
  2. Clearly issues are on a per-model basis.

Plex ran fine for me on QTS 5.
The fact my nas would routinely reboot and lock up for no reason however prompted me to downgrade back to 4.5. Perhaps I’ll give it another go on the next beta release

Thanks for your support. It is working fine after updating the conf file.

I tried to update my Version 1.23.3.4707 on my QNAP TS-453D with Beta 5 with the version PlexMediaServer-1.23.4.4805-186bae04e-x86_64.qpkg which is shown as a download and it didn’t work.
But the version 1.23.3.4707 doesn’t have any problems for me, so I’ll stay with it.

To all following here:

After a brief conversation with QNAP, we confirmed it’s safe to completely remove the upper version limit from the QPKG

The change will make it out In the next release or so (no definitive version yet)

Crossing to higher versions (QTS 4 → QTS 5) won’t be an issue any more.

I will restate: Given QTS 5.0 is Beta, and that we and others have seen some issues, we cannot support it. Just as with Synology; Support is “Best Effort” — aka. “No Guarantees of success and not our fault if not”
