Unable to install latest server package on QNAP NAS (64 bit)

Hi,
I have just tried to do an update of my Plex Server on a QNAP TVS-EC1080 running 4.3.4.0644.

When I try to do the usual manual install I get following error:
“The following items could not be installed. Please see the system logs for more details”.
The version I am trying to install is: PlexMediaServer_1.13.5.5291-6fa5e50a8_x86_64.qpkg

I am doing the same process that I have always used in the past to update the server but this time it is not working.

Regards,
Gary.

Gary,
That’s a new one indeed. What does the system’s log report?

Chuck,
The GUI System Log shows absolutely nothing.

The error came between stopping and enabling Plex around 12:50.

I am not sure how else to view logs as I am not really a CLI guy.

Regards,
Gary.

Ok Gary,

Let’s ask it nicely.

  1. SSH into it.
  2. dmesg | less and look for the install error

If that fails, there’s one more step to take.

I suspect you have a bad download (incomplete)

Chuck,
Could not see anything trying that.

I have downloaded again and I have some older versions that are later that the currently running version so will try to install again.

Unfortunately I have a remote user watching a movie at the moment so will wait until they have finished and give it another go and get back with the result.

Many thanks,
Gary,

Gary,
If dmesg had no plex related messages in it then the installer never started the actual installation. 99% certain the qpkg didn’t download correctly.

Chuck,
I tried and still nothing.
I tried the latest 3 versions I have in my archive:
PlexMediaServer_1.13.5.5291-6fa5e50a8_x86_64.qpkg
PlexMediaServer_1.13.4.5271-200287a06_x86_64.qpkg
PlexMediaServer_1.13.4.5251-2e6e8f841_x86_64.qpkg

All with the same result.

Scrolled through the complete output of dmseg and could not see anything relating to Plex. I used Terminal on my Mac.

Regards,
Gary.

Ok Gary, Ready to get your fingers dirty? :smiling_imp:

  1. Upload the .qpkg to a directory you can easily find in the shell on your qnap
  2. SSH into it
  3. cd to that directory
  4. chmod +x PlexMediaServer_1.13.5.5291-6fa5e50a8_x86_64.qpkg
  5. ./PlexMediaServer_1.13.5.5291-6fa5e50a8_x86_64.qpkg
  6. Copy & paste all shell session output back here so I may see what’s happening.

Chuck,
You are an absolute star. That worked perfectly. (After I remembered that Linux files structure is case sensitive!!)

Here is the output:

I guess now I know how to do it the “proper” way I can do it this way in the future :grinning:. Still unclear why the GUI method did not work though.

Many thanks,
Gary.

Gary,
This is proof QTS installed the package correctly but App Center has a problem.

Before doing anything further, please create a QNAP support ticket.

Advise them of this problem and include the console output above.

You should not need to install software this way. There is a GUI problem on your machine. They will address it with you privately. They will likely ask for remote access permission. It’s safe to grant it. (they are in my machine frequently haha)

As secondary question. You’re installing on an ARMv8 ?? You showed me the X86_64 link.

No it is an Intel ® Xeon® CPU E3-1246 v3 @ 3.50GHz

My system is in the second screen grab I posted in my first post, albeit a bit small to view in one.

This is what I ask about.

Is this 1.13.3.5208 ?

I had the same problem. Try rebooting the NAS and then installing. That worked for me.

Chuck,

Finding this thread with your straightforward workaround was very helpful. I thought I was going crazy when I tried to do something I’ve done dozens of times before — install an update to PMS on my QNAP TS 453 Pro. Usually takes < a minute to complete. All of a sudden I hit a wall trying to get 1.13.5.5291 installed. I followed your instructions to do the install via ssh and I was not successful.

I’m pasting my shell session output in hopes that maybe you can spot the problem?

Datafile error is just what it says. The .qpkg file is incomplete or damaged.

It is a specialized shell archive format.

This is why you can copy it and then ‘execute’ it. It’s like one of those windows self-extracting archives

I’ve been working on this since I posted my first failed attempt, pulling my hair out trying to figure out what’s wrong. Turns out Cyberduck wasn’t actually moving the entire qpkg file. It kept stopping at ~15%, so the file was indeed incomplete. I think there is a permissions problem somewhere so I tried a new approac. I simply copied to PMS qpkg to one of the built-in directories that comes with the QNAP file system and this time it worked like a charm

[/share] # cd Public

Maybe this will help someone else in the meantime while QNAP fixes the App Center

Submit a ticket to QNAP, They’re remote in and fix it. I just had a problem and it was fixed within a few days because I had to wait for Engineering to fix it.

You might be able to get it fixed in real-time

Hi,
I submitted a ticket with QNAP and got the following not very useful response:

Hi Gary,

Thanks for contacting QNAP.
I am afraid we don’t support upgrade Plex with qpkg, because the official version of plex with your model is 1.13.0.023 now.
If you upgrade it manually, we can’t promise its stability and provide debug for you.

Best Regards,

Gary,
What model QNAP do you have please and when did you purchase it?
Are you in the US or EU?
