Is latest version of Plex Server compatible with latest version of QNAP firmware 5.0.0.xxxx?

As per title request.
I really need to know this as in the QNAP firmware 5.0.0.1828 release notes I read:

  • QTS 5.0.0 temporarily does not support certain third-party applications, utilities, or services.

…and I really don’t want to screw up everything just for updating the QNAP firmware.

I mean…it is good to keep the QNAP firmware always up to date, specially if it is a new base release like the 5.0.0, as my actual last release was still 4.5
But this doesn’t mean that I have to kill my streaming experience for that!!
If a new version of Plex Server or QNAP firmware is necessary to guarantee that, well I’m willing to wait a bit more…but such information of compatibility has to be given for making any decision, and I’m quite surprised it has not been given any clue about it.

Thanks.

YES. Plex has been supported for QTS 5.0 for some time now.

I made it QTS 5.0 compatible at the same time as I made it QuTS Hero compatible.

I guess this is off-topic, but do you mind me asking for a personal opinion whether you think QTS v5 is stable and reliable enough to upgrade to yet?

I really only run Plex, Borg Backup and HBS 3 Hybrid Backup Sync.

I am backing up a 99TB array to the TVS-1282 (QTS 5.0.1828).
That should tell you something?

I personally upgraded to QTS 5 and have had excellent reliability. Also my understanding is QTS upgrades usually come with pretty significant security upgrades most of the time. For me the increased security basically makes it a necessity.

I am continuing my 5.0.1828 compatibility tests today on all the QNAP models in the lab.

I do not expect any difficulties

Mine is a TS-453Bmini (4x 8TB drives, RAID 5). Would you be so good as to confirm back when your testing is complete?

Your NAS appears to be very similar to mine. I run a TS-453d and have had no issues. If anything I would argue my NAS runs better after the upgrade. Qnap appears to me to be very good about not releasing half baked broken software. I don’t think you have anything to be worried about. I do understand the concern though.

Hot off the press :smiley:

Can you be more explicit? I’m missing the link between a TS-128a and the -453Bmini …or was your post for someone else (in which case ignore me!)?

@JCHH

Don’t you know? I always ignore you when I can! :rofl: :rofl: :rofl:

The point of my post is that PMS is running well on QTS 5.0.

My TS-128A development system is always on

My TVS-1282 , which also runs that same QTS 5.0 and Plex version is currently shut down. (it’s my backup server / Plex development box now)

I have yet to find any issues.

I will be upgrading all but 3 of the NAS machines today

Got it, thanks!

I have PMS latest and QTS 5.0 now on 3 of the lab boxes (ARMv8 and X86_64).

Unfortunately, our TS-453BE has died. I’ll contact QNAP for a replacement.

Thanks to everyone for your support!

@JCHH

Did you ever doubt me? :thinking:

Wait… Don’t answer that! :rofl:

haha - no, I absolutely trust you! years of your posts on this forum has proven that :slight_smile:

@ChuckPa quickie - have you switched on the QuFirewall? I did and now Plex is unavailable outside my network and I am not familiar enough with that app (yet) to create a rule to allow Plex through. Is there something simple I can do?

@JCHH

No.

None of my NAS machines are the edge device (firewall). That’s too risky IMHO.

I have a dedicated firewall appliance (pfSense).

  • One port untrusted (WAN)
  • One port trusted (LAN)
  • Default action it to block all untrusted traffic unless
    a. Reply to a previous outbound
    b. Explicit rule to allow the unsolicited inbound. (Plex Remote Access)

thanks for a speedy reply.

Mine is also behind a router firewall, so I have switched QuFirewall off and all is good in the world again.

…I am thinking of getting a pfSense though - I hear good things about them.

I thoroughly enjoy its protection and features.

  1. Only those people who I allow to see my Plex server can. All others blocked.
  2. It handles the VPN to Plex HQ.
  3. It handles the virtual adapter which isolates the guest WiFi to it’s own tagged subnet.
