As per title request.
I really need to know this as in the QNAP firmware 5.0.0.1828 release notes I read:
QTS 5.0.0 temporarily does not support certain third-party applications, utilities, or services.
…and I really don’t want to screw up everything just for updating the QNAP firmware.
I mean…it is good to keep the QNAP firmware always up to date, specially if it is a new base release like the 5.0.0, as my actual last release was still 4.5
But this doesn’t mean that I have to kill my streaming experience for that!!
If a new version of Plex Server or QNAP firmware is necessary to guarantee that, well I’m willing to wait a bit more…but such information of compatibility has to be given for making any decision, and I’m quite surprised it has not been given any clue about it.
I personally upgraded to QTS 5 and have had excellent reliability. Also my understanding is QTS upgrades usually come with pretty significant security upgrades most of the time. For me the increased security basically makes it a necessity.
Your NAS appears to be very similar to mine. I run a TS-453d and have had no issues. If anything I would argue my NAS runs better after the upgrade. Qnap appears to me to be very good about not releasing half baked broken software. I don’t think you have anything to be worried about. I do understand the concern though.
@ChuckPa quickie - have you switched on the QuFirewall? I did and now Plex is unavailable outside my network and I am not familiar enough with that app (yet) to create a rule to allow Plex through. Is there something simple I can do?
None of my NAS machines are the edge device (firewall). That’s too risky IMHO.
I have a dedicated firewall appliance (pfSense).
One port untrusted (WAN)
One port trusted (LAN)
Default action it to block all untrusted traffic unless
a. Reply to a previous outbound
b. Explicit rule to allow the unsolicited inbound. (Plex Remote Access)
