Server Version#: Version 1.20.1.3232
Player Version#: 8.5.1.19778 (2c9485c3)
Hi,
The past couple of weeks I have been unable to stream anything directly to my Amazon FireTV. I run Plexpass on a FreeNAS server using the latest plexpass versions and freenas version.
My fire TV is fully updated also.
I originally thought it might be an update to the server, so I rolled back to the latest (months ago) release. No dice. I reset my FireTV to factory default too and same thing.
My FireTV App settings are: quality (all) = original.
Audio passthrough: optical /ac3
refresh rate switching: off
resolution switching: off
h264 max level: 5.1
adv. video player: on (have also tried off)
This problem only seems to happen when I watch movies that are 1080p (8 or 10bit).
What happens is when the movie plays, it seems to run at about 3 FPS - if I change the quality from play original to convert automatically, it works but sometimes depending on the movie file (probably higher bitrate copies) it struggles. Under the “show all options”, I used to have everything from original down to 480p, but now the highest option other than convert automatically is 720p 2mb/s, which looks awful.
I’ve checked my server settings too and nothing has changed, I tried tweaking some things, again no dice.
What logs should I post exactly to help fix this? I just stopped the server and cleared the Logs folder, and turned on logging on the FireTV app. I’ll attempt to play a movie, let it stutter for 30 seconds, then switch to convert automatically, wait a bit, then convert to the highest option I can see, then exit and upload logs.
bump. anyone able to shed any light on this? I tried changing the remote streaming options to 12 and 9mbps in the app but sometimes 12 works other times it has to be 8, and other times it can direct stream 10bit mkv files fine without transcoding.
bump. still having this issue, tried wiping the fire tv stick again and using it before updating, same thing. must be a problem with the server but then I also tried using an older version.
I changed some settings on the client/server, and then when I played The Matrix it was trying to play the original version as I’d prefer directly, but it was stuttering as expected, so I changed it to adjust automatically, and then it closed saying the server isn’t powerful enough. I changed some settings back and forth and restarted the server and got it ‘working’ again, allowing me to actually watch things.
I think an important bit of info to note is: Sometimes when I am streaming/converting at 1080p 12mpbs it is jittery/laggy, as well as even 1080p 4mbps, but if changed to direct and back, it may stream even higher and be totally fine, so something must be happening here.
First off you should also enable HEVC in the plex client options.
If it isn’t that, then you should check your network connection.
If you try to download the file on a computer from the plex server, what speed it downloads that file?
I don’t have a HEVC option in my firetv client, maybe it was removed?
If I transfer a movie from any of the pools on my server, they can go from 60mbs to 250mbs. I also have plex installed/running with its metadata/temp folder (left blank for default) on an SSD. I just can’t figure it out.
I made sure it was all running and everything was set to things like make my cpu hurt and all that. I stopped the server, cleared the logs and restarted it. I have attached the logs.
I tried to play a movie, nothing special about the file just an mkv like the other 1,000 movies I have, I should be able to direct stream it to my TV like I have been able to do with movies in the past that no longer can.
The video plays as if it’s running at like 10 FPS, but the audio is fine. If I go to the onscreen display and change it to adjust automatically, it will adjust to something like 19mbps and work fine transcoding. Change it back, back to a crawl. Any ideas?
