Can't stream on my own account outside of network

Hi there, I have somewhat of a unique problem accessing streaming from my own server on my own account.

Basically, every one I share with can watch without any hiccups, all my settings are correct, green and good, how ever, when I log in to my account from outside my home, it only displays “something went wrong” with a big Retry button and has done so for quite some time and I’ve hoped an update would had fixed it by now but this has persisted. This happens on the web player, plex media player and the android mobile app.

No matter what I search for it always brings me to the default tutorials which arent helpful as my settings are good and every one else can stream from me anyway, it seems to only affect my own account.

My setup is just a windows machine with Plex Media Server running Version 1.29.0.6244.

Where does it say “something went wrong” and which app are you using to access your server?

Im using the official Plex app from the Google Play Store on my phone and Plex Media Player and the Web Player on my laptop.
I log in and i can see items but no posters load so it’s all gray rectangles but it does show titles and the watch status bar at the bottom of the gray rectangles.
When I select an item to watch it just shows “Something went wrong”

Note that this only happens when i try it outside my home network, it works perfectly fine when im on my home network.

Do you have set up a special route from your mobile devices into your home network? i.e. a VPN or similar technology?
Are you using a VPN on your server machine?
Have you defined a “manual server” (i.e. an IP address) in the properties of the plex app?
Could you check the hosts file on your notebook if it contains any Plex-related entries?
