Cast Button Greyed Out Desktop App Windows 10

Really not sure what is up – seems isolated to this computer. All others work fine. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing. No dice.

Please help! Thanks

In general, all devices must be in the same local network segment.
If your router is “fracturing” your local network by separating wired and wireless clients, trun that off.

VPNs usually have the same effect. If you use a VPN, disable it or create an exception for Plex.

The network connection must be classified as “private” in Windows, or the firewall is shutting down all ports, thus preventing any activity in the local network.

I further recommend to disable any power saving options for the network adapter. Both on the server and the client, if they’re both running on Windows.

Thank you for the response!

My laptop is currently wired in, as is the media center PC.

The weird thing is that the “cast” button in the top right corner of the media PC is non functional. It just doesn’t work — clicking it doesn’t even pull up a menu, unlike my laptop or desktop.

I went ahead and disabled the firewall on that media PC entirely — no dice. The cast button still does nothing, no other PCs/Phones can see it. Really aggravating since it makes it borderline impossible to control media on the device!

Is it worth a full Windows wipe at this point?

No. Which Plex app are you using?

Thanks Otto,

Last time I checked it was version 1.25.0.1511 of the Plex desktop app. Same as is running on my laptop.

Update: looks like there was an update available, just installed it, no change.

What type of device are you trying to cast to?

Are you saying that Plex for Windows is only behaving like this on this one computer? i.e. do you have several computers with Plex for Windows installed?

I’m just trying to cast to and from this device in general, but clicking the button does nothing — it’s like there’s no button at all. Also the device is not seen as a player by other devices. I have remote play and advertise as player checked.

I also have Plex for windows on my laptop and my desktop.

Do you have a VPN software installed on the affected machine?

Nope, no VPN client.

Interesting thing happened. Last night I tried to install Reflector 3 on the media machine in question, a piece of software that turns your computer into an airplay receiver, chrome cast receiver etc.

It showed up as an AirPlay device on my iPhone, but the chrome cast/direct stream side of it didn’t show up in anything from YouTube to Plex on any device.

It makes it seem like something is wrong with Windows if it is not allowing the machine to utilize this functionality regardless of app.

Is the clock time and date set correctly in all devices?
If these are off, no encrypted communication can function.
Nowadays every device has a way to adjust the clock automatically over the network, but I recommend to set it manually once with at least 1 – 2 minute accuracy.
