Server Version#: 1.41.3.9314
Player Version#: (??? using the Plex app, current version)
I have a few issues (I think). The main one being that only a scant few of the actor’s images appear under the cast in movies, most do not. I’ll use Tom Hanks as an example. Tom Hanks’ image doesn’t appear on the cast listing for any movie with Tom Hanks (the 'Burbs is a good example). The other issue is that if I try to choose ‘The Movie Database’ as my ‘Agent’ under ‘Advanced’. I get a red alert telling me that ‘Library Upgrade Required’. I get the modal pop-up window and consent. Nothing really seems to happen other than the server seems to go through the motions. But the settings always default back to ‘Plex Movie’ for both the ‘Scanner’ and the ‘Agent’.
Even if I refresh the movie’s metadata, fix-match, etc, nothing seems to work. I cleaned bundles and optimized the database, then restarted the server. That didn’t resolve the issue.
Not sure what else to try. Seeking some guidance here.
Not sure if these are the specific settings you are looking for attached here. I’ve had Plex for a number or years now, so a lot of my content was put in prior to 2020. Also want to state that a movie I added last night has all of the cast images. However if you click on a cast member who is in other movies in my library, the other movies don’t appear, just the new one that I added.
That looks ok…
Weirdly, the metadata on Plex’s backend appears to be ok too – so not exactly sure what might be causing this. Can you force-refresh the metadata of the movie again and take a look at your server logs (or share them here) to see if there’s any oddities / issues / warnings?
Oddly refreshing the movie’s metadata worked for the 'Burbs this morning. So, I did a refresh of another Tom Hanks movie (Captain Phillips) and it pulled in the cast member images for it as well. Clicking on Tom Hanks now pulls up both the 'Burbs and Captain Phillips. So, now refreshing all metadata in my current movie library. Hopefully that will resolve the issue. It’s just going to take a bit. I’ve got over 3,000 movies in Movies alone.
I do want to ask another related question. If I select to prefer my local metadata, should I expect a metadata refresh to still pull in cast images? I ask because I have some additional tags that I prefer for categories.
That’ll depend.
If you include the cast names as embedded metadata, Plex will probably not be able to resolve those (there’s sometimes dozens of actors/actresses with the same name – so Plex has no means to know which is the one in your metadata).
If you only add basic metadata (e.g. title, release date…), Plex should still try to match the media in the background and look for the additional information in its online repository. That being said – I haven’t tested this in quite some time.
That makes sense. I use Subler to populate metadata for content and that does indeed pull in a full cast list. So maybe that was the issue on my end. I’ll just keep it unchecked, clean up some of the tagging for a few categories and hopefully I won’t have to refresh the entire movie catalog again.
