Casting

Server Version#: 1.28.0.5999-97678ded3
Player Version#: 1.52.1.3195-a0c4d5e9
Mac Mini directly connected to TV via HDMI

In the past I used to be able to cast from a couple of iPhones and an iPads to the Mac Mini running the Player. At some point, the ability to do that stopped. I am able to cast to a Firefox browser but I cannot cast to the Mac Player running on the Mac Mini.

Has something changed or am I missing something obvious?

Only Plex HTPC can be remote controlled.

Oh I see.
Out of interest, can I roll back to a version where it does work?
Assuming I can, woudl I need to roll back the server and the player?
If so what version or versions would that be?

The version is mentioned in the linked post.
But the player is always updating itself.

Plus, sooner or later you won’t be able to use the old player with a newer server.
And bugs won’t get fixed of course.

There is no functioning HTPC solution for plex at this point, the desktop version isn’t controllable outside a desk scenario and the new application crashes dozens of times a day, on just about any setup.

I’d suggest moving to the kodi plex plugin at least temporarily.

Assume I’m a complete idiot and indulge me.

I have a TV connected to a Mac Mini which is running Plex Server and Plex Player.
I have an iPhone and iPad.

What is the best way for me to control, select and watch the contents of my server on the TV?

Connected how?
A HDMI cable from the video output of the Mac to the TV?
Or is the connection by network?
Either way: in order to operate a Plex client on a tv screen, you are better off with a “10-foot user interface”, which is what all the Plex smart TV clients and Plex HTPC have.
I think you can even make the remote control of some Mac models work with Plex HTPC.

It is also possible to use one of your mobile device to operate as a remote control of the Plex HTPC software.

In order for this to work, all involved devices (including the server) must be connected to the same local network.

Yes Mac Mini is connected to the TV via HDMI cable.
The TV is NOT a Smart-TV, just an old TV. So I am guessing then that thi s"1–foot user interface" is out of the question?
All devices operate on the same Network.

You have my attention with this. How do I do this? Is PLEX HTPC something I need to install on the MacMini instead or as well as the Plex Player?

No, you can have it with Plex HTPC.

Plex HTPC is yet another type of Plex client.
You install it onto your Mac.
It doesn’t matter if there is already another Plex client or the Plex server installed on that machine. They can happily co-exist.

The how is explained in the link I gave above.

Thanks, that appears to work perfectly. Exactly what I wanted to do.
Sorry I didn’t understand your first reply or rather I didn’t digest it properly as I didn’t know what HTPC actually was.
