Using iPAD as remote control for PLEX on MacMini

Server Version#: 4.123.2
Player Version#: 1.87.2.87-87488d5a
I have both the “PLEX MEDIA SERVER” & “PLEX” apps on a M1 MacMini. I want to control PLEX on the MacMini with my iPAD. When I try and select a device as indicated on some posts, there are NO devices available. I have REMOTE ACCESS disabled because I don’t intend to play from my server unless I’m at home. What am I doing wrong?

What client are you using? Remote control should be available on older version 1.45 or lower of Plex for Mac. If you have an up to date version then remote control (advertise as player) was removed.

Or it’s available for Plex HTPC for Mac (modern versions).

Plex DocumentationCasting, Flinging, & Remote Control

You cannot cast/fling to some Plex clients such as Plex Desktop or Plex Web.

See the Overview and Supported Plex Companion Apps articles.

Thanks for the info, Truly appreciate the quick response.
I find it interesting that the PLEX MEDIA SERVER on MACos can only be a controller. I turned on my LG TV and was able to play the media through the TV via PLEX on my MacMini. I was not able to see the LGTV on the iPAD. But why would I want to do that when I can control and watch/listen to PLEX from either the TV or iPAD apps directly? This doesn’t make sense to me.

I use the MacMini as a “headless playback server” connected to a DAC and then out to an amplifier & speakers.
I also use the AUDIRVANA program which can be controlled by the AUDIRVANA iPAD app.
I can also control the SPOTIFY app on the MacMini via it’s iPAD app.
So I was hoping to do the same with the PLEX iPAD app, but I guess not.

It seems like you should be able to from iPad to TV.

It is the intended scenario for flinging. So something else if different about your iPad. Are you using the iPad App with the same security level and other miscellaneous settings? (Same Wi-Fi?)

Correction, I was able to “fling” from iPad to TV.
But I still don’t see the reasoning for it. If I want to listen/view on my TV, I would do it directly from the PLEX app on the TV.
I don’t see the logic.

Because my MacMini is “Headless”, ideally I’d like to use the iPAD as a REMOTE to control the PLEX SERVER.

Are you wanting to play media on the Mac Mini and control it from your iPad?

If so, you need a Plex client on the Mac Mini that can be a receiver.

Run Plex HTPC on the Mac Mini. It is the only desktop client that can be a receiver.

Correct. Thank You.
Before I set this all up, will I still be able to independently play from other PLEX apps installed around the house (TV, wife’s iPAD, etc)?

Yes.

This does not change how Plex clients (apps) work.

Plex HTPC is just another Plex client, like the Smart TV app, the iPad app, etc. It just happens to be the one desktop app that can act as a receiver.

FYI, Plex HTPC is meant to look similar to the Plex SmartTV app (like on the LG). It will start full screen (at least on my PC). You can change it to work in a windowed mode in the app settings.

Also, it is meant to be used with a remote control (much like a SmartTV app), so not all the setting choices respond to mouse clicks. You will have to use the arrow and enter/return keys for some navigation.

Thanks FordGuy, it worked.
Sometimes a little sluggish (like when adjusting volume) but it works.
One thing I wish is that it displayed, was the :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: for each song on the iPAD screen in ALBUM view. Maybe that’s something for the future.
What would also be nice in ALBUM view is a small indicator beside the song that is playing. I know we see it at the bottom of the screen, but if it was in the list it would save looking down at the bottom each time.
Thanks FordGuy & Lunamonkey :+1: :+1: :+1:

I completely forgot to mention PlexAmp (I don’t have music on my server yet).

It is a music only client. It will show the star ratings, supports playlists, lots of music specific stuff.

Run it on your Mac Mini and on your iPhone. You can cast from the iPhone to the Mac Mini.
