Certain Videos Crash Plex Streaming

Server Version#: 1.22.0.4163
Player Version#: Android, Windows, Chromecast (i.e. all)

I have recently found that certain videos crash Plex streaming. They will play for a few minutes, then I get a “Buffering” error on the playback device, which never ends. Once that has happened, the server will not stream anything to any device (I’ve tried Windows, Android and Chromecast devices). The videos will play on the plex server itself in the web client (and play fine in Windows Media Player).

I’ve tried exiting and restarting Plex Media Server - that does not help. I’ve tried manually killing any Plex tasks I can fine - that also does not help. The only thing that works is physically restarting the Plex server machine.

There is nothing obviously different about the movie files, they are 1080p H.264 video EAC3 5.1 audio, the same as many of the other videos that Plex plays just fine.

Any ideas what might be causing these videos to crash the streaming service? Also, any suggestions on a less brutal way of getting streaming up and running again than restarting the server?

So when this happens, the web client also starts to fail to playback ? or will it continue to work?

Are the clients local - eg Android through wifi or remote ?

Initially you could get logs from the plex android app and plex media server and after that may need a sample video file

for logs see

The web client on the server continues to work.

The clients are all local, on the same WiFi (or LAN) as the server.

I’ll try to make some time over the weekend to get some logs.

One thing I have noticed is that all of the effected videos (that either exhibit this problem, or stutter during playback) have EAC-3 audio. No videos I’ve tried with AC-3, AAC, PCM or DTS-HD have exhibited the problem.

I did notice several threads about problems with EAC-3 and have tried the suggestion of deleting the contents of the codecs folder - this doesn’t seem to have made any difference.
