Ok, so streaming is not choppy, but playing from local storage is?
Update: we’re a step closer. Since I was already copying over to the phone, I tested it with “open on device” in Plex and the MKV file is now playing smoothly!
I also just tested playing directly from the Plex Server and that does indeed seem to lag.
To me, that means I have to upload the mkv file to the Plex Server and play it from there to see if it fixes it, right? Then also try syncing that file with the transcoding patch to double check.
Sounds like a plan. This would confirm my suspicion that the mp4 files were incorrectly muxed.
Theoretically, you could remux the mp4 files to mp4 again (including ‘optimize for streaming’) and resolve the issue that way as well.
That’s an interesting idea, could you elaborate on what we just did a little bit maybe?
And also what you mean with “optimize for streaming”
I will definitely try that though
A little background to the issue High Bandwidth via Direct Play on Windows 10
And it does not only affect streaming connections, but also the rather low-bandwidth connection to the phone’s internal storage. Using an SD card for media storage will make it significantly worse.
As for ‘optimize for streaming’ (sometimes also called “fast start”): https://blog.dareboost.com/en/2018/01/optimize-your-mp4-video-for-better-performance/
(start reading from " Start playback before downloading the entire content")
Ah that’s very interesting, I think I’m gonna do that for all files then, didn’t know video and audio could be misaligned (this badly) by default. The second article isnt very conclusive for me though. As soon as I get home Im gonna try to convert my library. One more thing, assuming I only have files that were fixed like the one we did together, will there be an issue with playing back from a micro sd? I was planning to do that with a 128gb card.
As long as you use at least a card of speed class 10, I don’t foresee any issues. At least if the files stay in the 1-digit gigabyte size regions.
Ok great!
Also great: i just tested it with the remuxed mkv file, direct play worked smoothly and syncing it as well! I also confirmed what you wer3 saying about remuxing to mp4 again, also worked both online and offline! Is there any point in doing that though?
Anyway, thanks so much for helping so quickly!
Ah and another thing, I’d be interested in why VLC had no issues playing the original, “messed up” mp4 file
It confirms that your original files were suffering from the same issue as is discussed in here: High Bandwidth via Direct Play on Windows 10 - #8 by gbooker02
Which file format you are using to re-mux the files, to fix the issue is up to you.
