Chromecast Live TV

Live TV works on Emby. Might have to switch …

Hopefully this finally gets prioritized in 2019. In the advertising and documentation for live TV and DVR, it is not at all clear that it does not function with Chromecast. Luckily I didn’t sign up for the lifetime membership and only lost the money on the TV Tuner and Antenna. Still, some murky ethics there.

Because of this, I cancelled my PlexPass. Probably not a big impact, but maybe it will help someone from the Plex team recognize this is an important feature.

Yep, absolute let-down. What is the use of live-tv when you cannot cast to your tv? I absolutely love plex and hate the prospect of having to revert back to Emby again. So plex devs, please please please start being sensible again? Ok?

Thx,
R.

It does seem to me that having Premium Live TV functionality without ability to cast to one of the most popular casting devices on the market is an inherent anti-pattern. I know it’s on your internal roadmap, would be foolish for it not to be, and understand the difficulties.

Dammit! I got burned this, too. Chromecasts everywhere. Plex on a powerful PC. I bought an HD Homerun thinking this was the perfect solution. I almost fell for the lifetime Plex Pass that was on sale (before I set this all up last night). Luckily I only tried the monthly to see if it all works. It doesn’t. No live TV casting.

Looks like the HD HR will be returned and Plex Pass cancelled. It appears a stand alone Tablo system is better capable of doing what everyone with a Chromecast wants.

Disappointed.

So, I ended up buying a plex lifetime pass when got a deal back in February even though I said I wouldn’t. I will say it’s good enough for the sale price (got mine for the original lifetime price of $75) without the chromecast support. If you can get it at that price, I’d jump on it. I actually took the difference and bought a couple of amazon firetv devices during the amazon sale in June/July (not sure exactly when) and have been pretty happy with it. My only complaint there is making the grid view the default view for live tv. I’ve been messing around with Emby as well. Both have their pros and cons. Plex’s biggest pro is that it’s everywhere, although emby is catching up.

well, we’re into 2019 and still no support :disappointed_relieved:

Well, count me in as another person burned by the lack of this feature. I have a Chromecast on every TV in my house, and I just bought an HDHomeRun and antenna explicitly for this purpose, only to get burned when I tried to cast it.

Just came across this… encouraging at least:

Finally! Some light at the end of the tunnel!

Glad to see live TV on Chromecast is being worked on. Please provide a release time frame asap! Like so many others, I ponied up a pretty penny for a Plex Pass and tv tuner for ONLY THIS, just to be disappointed.

Plex doesn’t post timelines for upcoming features. Well usually they don’t.

I use a 3rd Gen Chromecast with Plex, and often when watching back an OTA DVR recording it will crash/reboot. It seems to happen when there’s a glitch in the video (we don’t have the best OTA reception). If you restart playback in the same place, it’ll crash again. My hunch is that this issue might be severe enough to block release of live TV. If poorly encoded video/audio within a valid container will crash it when being played back, I can imagine the experience is even worse live OTA.

I’m having the exact same problem with Chromecast crashing during DVR recordings playback.

+1 for this feature.

I’m on a plex pass month trial and the only reason to mantain the subscription is this thing working on chromecast.

I cannot cast live tv and casting DVR recordings neither works. The option for the later is available but when I hit play a message saying “something went wrong” (or something like that) appears.

My setup is as follows: enigma2 satellite deco that propagates sat signal to my local network via SAT>IP. In my Qnap NAS 251+ I have a python script to extract channels list to a m3u file and EPG data to an xmltv.xml file via openwebif API requests.

With those two files I feed an IPTV proxy (Telly) that acts as an HDHomeRun device for Plex. And then I have Plex with all channels and EPG info working. I can stream any channel and record any program. I have 4 tvs, all of them with chromecast and I can only watch live tv and recordings on my 5 inches mobile phone… WTF?

This is requested since 2017, come on…

+1 for this feature, Plex please give us some feedback on this.

So I’m looking for workarounds to the Chromecast issue.

First, I was thinking the HDHomerun Extend with transcoding would be useful in some way, but seems not really useful. If plex can record the mpeg2 files and then transcode them to the device as h264 for portable devices, and native mpeg2 for the “big tv” running the Nvidia Shield (for best quality) then what’s the point of always transcoding with the HD Homerun.

Then I was thinking i would just use the “Channels DVR” app for my live tv on the HDhomerun and stream that to the Chromecast. but then i found this thread saying they are also not supporting the chromecast. https://community.getchannels.com/t/play-via-chromecast-on-ios-app/1868/9

So the final “work around” is, there IS no workaround? So If i want to watch live TV, i have to have a second device on my TVs like an Apple TV, (or whatever) and switch over to that for live TV? I’m okay with that only IF… accessing the HDHomerun via 3rd party app like “Channels DVR” will not affect PLEXs DVR app… ? Does anyone know if you can run both? That is, i want plex to record my shows, and i should be able to watch them back on my chromecast via ios app casting… (no live) BUT at the same time, if i want live, can i ALSO switch over to second device (appletv) and run the 3rd party app like Channels DVR and stream live tv from the same hdhomerun? Or do i need to buy TWO HD homerunes and have one ported to Plex, and one ported to the Channels DVR app so i can have the option of live TV while still having plex record my shows? OR… the third option: abandon PLEX live tv all together and just use a third party system like the Channels DVR for all “live tv and dvr tv” and keep plex as it was for just my movies and pre-recorded stuff?

Can’t understand why this has not been implemented yet.

Time to cancel Plex Pass. I signed up solely to watch live TV on Chromecasts.

Very disappointed.
