Claiming my server makes me unable to connect

Server Version#: 1.18.1.1973
Player Version#: 4.8.3 (Web Client)

Hello! I’m having some issues with my Plex server after updating to 1.18.1.1973. When I try to connect to my server after claiming it, I can no longer connect to it, even on the locally hosted app. When I click the Claim Server button, the server options in the panel disappear after a few seconds, and the loading spinner continues for several minutes before eventually reverting to the Claim Server text.

If I delete the regkeys PlexOnlineMail, PlexOnlineToken, and PlexOnlineUsername, it (as you would expect) unclaims the server, and I can access it again. In addition to this, I’ve restarted PMS and my computer with no luck there.

In the logs, I found something that seems related, but it all looks fine to me:

Nov 05, 2019 23:44:00.515 [4432] DEBUG - Request: [127.0.0.1:51093 (Loopback)] POST /myplex/claim?token=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxXXXXXX (7 live) GZIP
Nov 05, 2019 23:44:00.515 [4432] DEBUG - HTTP requesting POST https://plex.tv/api/claim/exchange?token=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxXXXXXX
Nov 05, 2019 23:44:01.197 [4432] DEBUG - HTTP 200 response from POST https://plex.tv/api/claim/exchange?token=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxXXXXXX

If I press the button again after the first time, it responds with a 401:

Nov 05, 2019 23:51:07.477 [6368] DEBUG - Request: [127.0.0.1:52105 (Loopback)] POST /myplex/claim?token=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxXXXXXX (2 live) GZIP Signed-in
Nov 05, 2019 23:51:07.477 [2756] DEBUG - Completed: [127.0.0.1:52105] 401 POST /myplex/claim?token=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxXXXXXX (2 live) GZIP 0ms 436 bytes

I can’t see the server when connected through app.plex.tv when it is either claimed or unclaimed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I’m terrible at reading logs so will have to leave that to someone else. But the whole idea that you are having to reclaim a server after a simple server update suggests something has gone terribly wrong.
Claiming a server should be a one time thing when it’s initially set up and not every time there is an update.

Thanks for your reply! I didn’t have to reclaim it after the update – the update made me unable to connect to the server at all, including through localhost. When I “unclaimed” the server by deleting the registry keys, I was able to connect to the server again, but when I tried to reclaim it, the problem came back.

Bump – still looking for a solution

According to the logs, your PMS was claimed ok as a user named computr0nwith a login as nateXXXXXX@gmail.com (I scampled part of the email addy)

So are you sure you in your browser is logged into plex.tv as that user, and if so, please try a different browser

Hi Dane! Yes, I verified that I am logged in as that user. I tried Firefox and Chrome, neither of which were able to access the server.

Then try this:

Unfortunately these steps are pretty much what I’ve tried to do before. I just tried again following the steps and the same result occurred.

And noticed that your IP address is not private address space, so when trying to access PMS, you are trying directly on the box, and use 127.0.0.1 as the IP?

Yep, I’ve been accessing http://127.0.0.1:32400/web/index.html, the page that opens when you click Open Plex… from the taskbar. It’s possible something may be weird because I live in what is basically a college dorm with provided internet access – but Plex has worked on this network before, and as far as I understand I’m just trying to access the local version.
