Good Evening/Day Everyone,
I recently moved my son into his college dorm room (when did I get old enough to be able to say that?) and we’re having a problem. He cannot use the Plex server we have at home. I can see him trying in my router’s firewall logs and remote access works from cellular and other connections but the server always shows as unavailable when we try to access it from his router in his dorm room. I had him put the home’s IP address into the direct connect option of the roku’s plex app, tried non-standard ports…no dice. Same thing if you try to access the server from app.plex.tv on his laptop. However if he goes in with his laptop using the direct approach using a domain that I have it works. One more piece to the puzzle, if I turn on my PIA VPN on my phone while connected to his router it works just fine.
I suspect the issue has something to do with the double NAT. His router isn’t smart enough for me to put the VPN into the router so that’s out. I do have an extra PC laying around that I could turn into an OpnSense router and use his router as an AP (disabling DHCP, etc) and then have the old PC do the VPN connection, and if I have to I will…but it just seems like it should be unnecessary.
I can see his attempts to access my server in my Plex Logs as well so it doesn’t seem like the issue is getting to me, but rather getting back to him.
Are there any suggestions of the hive mind of how to deal with this without going to the extreme of building a router for him to use with a whole connection VPN?
Thanks and have a great day!
~Travis
