I just started using the collections feature to manage my home videos library. I created a collection for each year so that it was easy to see a list of videos for a specific year.
However, whenever I view a video from a collection, it is removed from the collection. Is this the expected behavior? I read the FAQ but saw no mention of this.
This is not what I expect. Seems like a bug to me.
Update: My Home Videos library is an “Other Videos” type. That seems to be related.
If a collection is part of “Movie” library type, I do not see the issue.
the only way an item can be removed from a collection is either the item no longer having the collection tag,
or it was a smart collection and the item no longer has an attribute that made it be part of the smart collection. like if you were filtered on Unwatched movies from 2019 when created then as soon as you watched it then it would be removed from collection.
I can’t repro that with home videos. it should work the same way. what version number of server are you running?
All the collections were manually created, not smart collections.
As indicated above, I created some other collections in my main “Movie” library to test. Strangely since doing that, I am unable to reproduce the bug, even in the exact same collection that was failing before.
I hate intermittent issues. I’ll keep an eye out for this but for now, I’m unable to reproduce it.
You could disable Settings > [Server Name] > Library > Automatically empty trash after scans as a precaution… if you have automatic or periodic library scans enabled and the files cannot be found this can result in items being immediately dropped. If they’re found again during the next scan, you’ll get “all new metadata” but your manual edits will be gone (including the collection tags of those items). This can e.g. happen if your media drives are temporarily unavailable or take too long to spin up.
If you disable Automatically empty trash after scans, Plex will keep the items in your library even if they’re no longer found (and therefore they’ll maintain the associated watch history, viewing states and manual edits as your collection tags if re-added).
