Hey, I’m here to talk about a weird bug. Now I’ve noticed this for a long time and never really said anything until now because I realized something that effects it.
The problem is navigating Collections on the LG TV app. Now the Collections on the LG app are displayed as a row of posters I move left/right on, not as a grid. If the collection has a number of items (like at least a 7 or 8), the navigating on the row will hang/freeze after the third title in both directions. Like say I’m going left -> right. The first two maneuvers over are fine, then when I try to go to the 4th item in the row, nothing happens – and the highlighting just sits still for several seconds before it moves, and this continues until you reach the end of the row, where it picks back up. The same thing happens if you go left again from the end. The first couple moves to the left are fine, then it starts freezing for several seconds on each change before it recovers at the end. This behavior pretty much makes Collections unusable to me on my LG. But they still seem to work fine on my other clients.
Today I had some free time so I started adding background images to my Collections (I have over a dozen). I was admiring my work on the LG and I realized the issue was gone. I could whip right through the collections with no delays now. Thank God, someone at Plex had fixed the bug in a recent update, I thought.
Then I came to a collection I had not assigned a custom background on, and the issue is still there! Checked a couple other libraries and yes, if you don’t have a custom background for the library specified (so Plex is using the default made from the items’ movie posters), the bug happens.
Also, looking at this further now I think I know why you have to have at least several items in a library to see the bug: if you have fewer Plex is able to display the entire library at once. But if you have more items, then Plex is forced to scroll the entire row to show you the end items, and it starts scrolling when you move from the 3rd to the 4th item in the Collection, and the same when starting at the end and going left. So combined with the “doesn’t happen with custom backgrounds” I now surmise is the delay is caused by the LG app having to re-read the poster info for the items to redraw the background each time the row needs to scroll. With a custom background it does not have to look at the individual items in this way.
