Collections into Smart playlist

I’ve spent the afternoon creating a BuffyVerse collection (in the correct order (aired order doesn’t cater for the double/triple episodes)), but don’t seem to be able to add this to a smart playlist or collection. Note, this isn’t a smart collection, just a ‘normal’ collection (I don’t have the cog in the corner)

The ‘collection’ is simple. show = Buffy or Angel, episodes manually sorted.

I simply want to add a ‘unwatched = true’, but no matter what I try, I can’t seem to accomplish this.

It seems the only way I can get a collection to appear in the smart playlist dropdown is, if I simply do TV programmes > Library > TV Shows > add to collection. However, this doesn’t give me the option to change the order.

Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: After some thought I’m wondering if I’m trying to over complicate things. I simply want a manually sorted playlist, which contains only unplayed episodes. Is there a simpler way of doing this?

You won’t be able to get this mixed… custom order is only available in classic/regular collections and playlists while filtering out any watched items requires a smart one. If you include the classic/regular collection as filter criteria in a smart playlist/collection, Plex will use its items but apply the order specified when creating the smart playlist/collection – it won’t maintain the custom order.

The most common approach I’ve seen when it comes to this kind of use case would be a smart playlist or episode collection, ordered by air date – assuming the cutover episodes actually aired in order (there’s a number of threads discussing this for DC, Marvel, NCIS or Law & Order shows.

Thanks Tom. I have followed the Arrowverse approach, and used the smart playlist-airdate option.

This will at least give me the episodes in aired order, and if I used the sort title option, I can ensure I get the Buffy episodes before the Angel episodes so the crossover episodes play in the correct order.

I guess the only think I miss out on is the grouping of some double and triple episodes which will get broken up.

Thanks for your help, and at least I know what I was attempting is not currently possible in Plex.
