Comparison of new Amazon Cube 3rd generation

With the announcement of the new amazon cube 4k 2022 3rd generation being released later this month, I have seen that it compares well with the NVidia fire shield pro 2022 especially when it comes to streaming. I understand the NFS is still best for gaming but as I do not game this is not a factor for me. Be interested in hearing some thoughts from some of the experts among you. TIA

Here’s the specifications: Device Specifications: Fire TV Cube | Amazon Fire TV

TrueHD not listed as a supported audio codec (same as all Fire devices). If you want passthrough for TrueHD & TrueHD + Atmos you’ll still want the Nvidia Shield Pro.

Ethernet port is 10/100 (same as all Fire devices). You’ll want to use 802.11ac/ax Wi-Fi if playing high bit-rate media such as 4K HDR Blu-ray rips, which can burst above 100 Mbps. Ethernet port on the Nvidia Shield Pro is 1 Gbps.

It supports AV1 video, as does the FireStick 4K Max. The Nvidia Shield Pro does not. If / when Plex adds support for AV1 video the hardware will be ready for it (see Plex Media Server 1.29.2.6273 - New Transcoder Preview).

I’ve friends & family members that use the FireStick 4K & 4K Max to access my server remotely. They are nice Plex clients. Unless a hands-on turns up a major problem, the Cube v3 should also work well with Plex.

I did just pre-order one of these, after spending some time with the Fire TV Stick 4K Max.

I’ve noticed that the Fire TV audio normalization option effectively fixes the audio issues that I’ve always had with Roku. But the client has some other problems, for example when I’m watching OTA and go “back” to the guide, it will just be missing data. Something is not syncing the guide between the server and client properly.

Plex also does not even add all of the free streaming channels to the “live TV” guide built into the UI, let alone any of the OTA channels.

Thanks FordGuy; the 1gbps is something I want; I currently use Fire 4K Max and get round this using a Ugreen USB/gbps ethernet adapter hooked up to the Firestick to overcome this. One thing I did like was the HDMI in/out ports that I could hook my Manhattan Freeview box to. What I like about the NFS is the A1 video enhancement to upscale to 4K. Does the Cube 3 do this?

No idea.

I did not see upscaling listed in the specifications.

You might search for some reviews online and see if they mention the capability.

From the link you provided:
AC3 (Dolby Digital)/ EAC3 (Dolby Digital Plus) /Atmos(DDP+JOC)/AC4(Atmos)/Dolby TrueHD(Atmos)

Yeah, I missed that.

It is still unclear exactly how the device supports TrueHD.

One person on Reddit has one and said it did not passthrough TrueHD to their receiver. However, it is unknown if that is due to how the Cube handles TrueHD, how it interacts with that person’s receiver, how the Plex app handles things, etc.

It would be great if the Cube supports TrueHD + Atmos passthrough. It would be nice for people to have an option to the Nvidia Shield Pro.

While its not much cheaper though and lacks Gigabit Ethernet, AI Upscaling and DTS/-HD/-X.
