Plex showing two iterations of my Synology NAS server

Server Version#: DSM 7.0.1-42218 Update 7
Player Version#: 1.42.2.10156-700010156
A couple of days ago I physically moved my 3 Synology servers and UPS from one room to another. I have had a couple of issues since. As of now I have lost contact with my server. I can get to all of my video files via MacOS-Find and play them there though. After digging around I find 2 instances of my server listed in Plex. From what I can tell, the unavailable one is my original. The one that looks available has none of my libraries in it. I realize I might be able to recreate all of my libraries in the available version but I would lose a lot of my watched history. I just moved this move from DSM 6 to 7 but only the initial version of 7.
I am looking for help in understanding why I now have these two versions of my NAS showing up in Plex. When I use the web interface (:32400), I get a weird sign in message I have never seen. Both of these are shown in the images I am attaching. Looks like I can’t attach images here ?

That might be the culprit. Upgrading from DSM 6 to 7 requires a few steps in order to preserve your Plex installation.

Thank you very much for this pointer. I will dig into this today. Really appreciate it.

I only have 1 volume on my system so I went to that section in the FAQ. I had already done some permission changes for ‘System internal user’ but I had given the PMS R/W but not the full admin. I just did that now and getting ready to reinstall PMS on this box. I remember during the DSM upgrade I had seen a screen asking if I wanted to repair Plex and I think I said yes but I really don’t remember the results or what came next. I will continue following the FAQ for now. Thanks again.

I believe I have the permissions done. When following the FAQ, my removal of PMS and then reinstalling it went good. It said it was successful. But there was no migration of data. I have no libraries now. I have about 3TB of movies, TV Shows, etc and it looks like I now have to start over ‘importing’ them back into Plex? This really makes no sense to me.

If the Plex migration is successful, there will be a migration.log file in the /Plex shared folder.

If the /Plex shared folder still has the database files, etc., then the migration did not complete.

Assuming the migration was not successful, you need to re-run FAQ 27.

  1. Verify the database files are still in /Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Databases

  2. Stop Plex Media Server

  3. Re-run the steps to give system internal user PlexMediaServer full control of the /Plex shared folder. IMPORTANT: Be sure to check the box to apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files.

  4. Re-run the steps to give system internal user PlexMediaServer read-only or read-write access to your media files. Full control is not needed. IMPORTANT: Be sure to check the box to apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files.

  5. Uninstall Plex Media Server. Choose the option to erase all of Plex Media Server. This will remove the server in /PlexMediaServer. It will not remove the server from /Plex or your media files.

  6. Using Synology File Station, delete any remaining files in /PlexMediaServer.

  7. Now re-install Plex Media Server. It should migrate the files from /Plex to /PlexMediaServer.

Drag them into the message window. They should insert at the cursor location.

You can also use the upload button (with the upward pointing arrow).

Thank you for that image tip.

Thanks @FordGuy61 . My first mistake was not redoing the perms after a uninstall/reinstall. I had set all of the perms for PlexMediaServer but somehow they didn’t survive. Once I did that, I went ahead and did latest DSM update, I was able to see Plex again but still no libraries. I am working on this redo you mentioned above for FAQ 27. I did not find the migration.log file and the database files were indeed still intact.

Regarding step 5 above, I uninstall Plex via the package using the Package Center in Synology DSM. I don’t remember ever seeing the option to ‘erase all of Plex Media Server’.

Either way I think its all moot now. Earlier today I was a little frustrated and went into my ‘empty’ Plex and tried adding a library. I have close to 12TB of data so I will it will take days to scan and update metadata on all of this. Do you think its possible to stop this ‘add library’ and rerun steps 5-7 above to get a successful migration? I am pretty much resigned to just starting over but the loss of ‘watched history’ is going to be a drag.

See the FAQ. It is the second picture for scenario one.

You’re doing scenario two, but you’ll see the same when uninstalling PMS. .

Yes.

Assuming you’ve already done steps 1-4, stop Plex Media Server then proceed with step 5.

Guess I was just going to fast and didn’t pay attention. Thank you.
