Configuring Remote Access with a Netgear XR1000

I’m at a loss. I can’t get the remote access to connect properly. I have configured port forwarding on my Netgear router to use 32400 for both External Start/End Ports and Internal Start/End Ports. with a service type of TCP. If anyone can give me some advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Can you see your router through it’s public port and the specified tcp port from outside your home network? You should be able to verify this using a service like canyouseeme.org.

If it’s not working…

  • does your router get a publicly routable IPv4 address from your ISP? (e.g. no CGNAT)
  • can you get it to work using a different external/public port number?

So CanYouSeeMe and Plex list the same public IP. However, my router shows a completely different IP. I also tried to create a Dynamic DNS Service through the router so I’m not sure if that is causing an issue also. Oh, and UPnP is on with a TCP protocol route from the External Port that Plex lists to the Internal 32400 port. I probably have 3 or 4 different settings conflicting with each other at this point so I’m obviously unsure where to start.

If you have a manual port forward, you don’t need UPnP to be enabled.
Based on your response it seems your ISP has you in a GCNAT setup – this would mean they’re not assigning publicly routable IPv4 addresses to their customers but treat them like a home network. Usually this means your router’s WAN IP address is a private network IP address. Can you verify if that’s the case?

If that is the case, your only shot is to contact your ISP and ask if they can give you a publicly routable IPv4 address. Some providers will simply reject it, others might want to sell you a static IPv4 address – while that’ll do the job, it’s usually rather expensive and not technically necessary.
My ISP has me in a CGNAT with regards to IPv4 but give me a publicly routable IPv6 address. Plex is still working on getting remote access to fully work with only IPv6; IIRC that’ll only work with iOS/tvOS devices and Plex Web… just mentioning it in case your ISP has put you in a similar situation.
