Confused on the installation instructions for DSM 7 and PMS, need some clarification

I’m trying to follow the instructions for upgrading my Synology NAS to DSM 7 and PMS to 1.24.4.5081, and I feel like I am missing a huge section of information. I just want to get some clarification before I start over a third time. I’ve tried to follow twice, and so far Plex for DSM 7 instantaneously installs with zero visible migration occuring and zero users added for me to adjust any sort of permissions to.

I get the first 5 steps, but I am very confused by the actual installation procedure.

I get to the “Begin Plex installation here”, but I don’t understand the wording here:

DSM 7 no longer allows us to go find the metadata directory and use it across volumes before starting PMS (This is the lack of “root” privilege blocking). As such we require the following two conditions are met we will attempt to automatically migrate you;

You have an existing DSM 6-created PMS installation and PMS is installed on the SAME STORAGE VOLUME as the “Plex” shared folder (this is critical)

You have an existing DSM 6-created installation and PMS is uninstalled and reinstalled on the same volume as the existing Plex share.

If you do not meet either of the above conditions we will warn you and advise you.

Does this mean that for the first install, do I need to pick /volume1/Plex (my original Plex save location) for the Folder path? Do I even have to worry about any settings for this first install and this is just a warning for when I DO get to the step where I have to worry about my library’s location? Also, what about

I never get a single error message featured in Scenario 1 or 2, and when I’ve tried just clicking through the installer, and there is no new user “PlexMediaServer” in my users list (do I have to make it myself or is that supposed to be done by the installer?)

I’m just trying to get some clarification, is there something I’m missing here? What specifically do I need to do after I’ve signed out and back in after bumping the idle time to 65535 minutes?

For the very first installation of Plex, Package Center will install Plex on whichever volume you have set as the default. If you only have one large volume then it won’t ask you. Package Center will install on Volume 1

I am concerned. You should see a “PlexMediaServer” shared folder, minimally in “Control Panel - Shared Folders”. If it’s there, but not in File Station (which it normally isn’t) , then don’t worry.

The timeout values are only for when you have an existing DSM 6 Plex installation (a “Plex” shared folder) and we need to move all that data to DSM 7 layout.

I think I’ve missed something in your questions?

Thank you for the response. I do only have a volume 1 on my NAS. My Plex library has always been saved in /volume1/Plex

I’ve once again completely uninstalled everything and am going through the initial install again to see if it has been my own ID10T error this whole time causing my confusion haha.

My questions mostly come from after the pre-installation and the beginning of the installation section, when I went through the install, it looks like the installer had none of the messages that the guide has.

I click on Normal installation, for the “Plex Media Server - Logging Options”, do I need to specify /volume1/Plex and choose “Tell PMS where to write log files in the field below” instead of Use PMS internal storage?

Thank you, this makes a lot more sense to me!

One more question, will the installer create the PlexMediaServer user by itself, or is that something I need to create myself? It’s been so long since I installed Plex originally (it’s the only software I run on the NAS), I can’t remember how the old user was made originally

I appreciate all of you guys’ help! It looks like the installer is working as it should so far

I have roughly 10Tb of Plex data, so yeah I definitely expect it to take a very long time. The installing… spinner has been going for the past 10 minutes, so it definitely looks like all is working now.

It actually has finished now and I do see everything just as I left it in DSM 6, so now I just need to make sure my end devices are happy. Thank you so much for all your help!

Actually, not quite. All of my content is still in the original Plex share alongside the migration.log. As far as I can tell, the only changes in terms of my files was the following:

  • The migration.log is now present in /volume1/Plex

  • The “Please do not place any media files here” files in the various languages that were here in /volume1/Plex are now gone.

The only folder in /Volume1/PlexMediaServer is the AppData folder. The “Please do not place any media files here” files are the only other things present there.

But all is working, even on end user devices!

So even if I do have all of my media organized into folders, they need to be in a folder themselves, not just sitting in the root? It shouldn’t be a problem for me to fix this, but since I just went through the upgrade to DSM 7, I should just create a /Media folder in /volume1/PlexMediaServer and move each folder one by one to that location and run a scan each time?

Oh I’m sorry, I misread the beginning. I need to create a completely separate share for media, and not use the shares that the actual Plex server creates for media at all. I always assumed it meant to just not have actual media files in the plex share’s root (raw .mp4’s for example). I see what you’re saying now.

It’s not that I’ve neglected to place warnings. The problem is how to convey a message in a file name. That’s impossible.

My latest idea, please tell me what you think, is to place a Warning.jpeg file (one for each language).

On the JPEG image will be (White on red background)

Place no media files anywhere in this shared folder.
Doing so can cause your server to be damaged.

Please create an appropriate shared folder anywhere else on the Synology.
