DSM7 - Plex Media Server - New Install Instructions request

Would it be possible to post instructions for a new install of PMS on DSM7?

I just purchased a new DS220+ and I have been unsuccessful in installing PSM and getting it to work. All the info I see here involves migration and upgrades, neither of which I want to do. There are assumptions about the level of Linux skills that installers have that gloss over some specific configuration procedures. I am generally pretty good at following instructions and can deal with working with Linux, but am by no means an expert, so clear and complete procedures really make a difference.

I am content to wait for a final release package that works if that is what I have to do, but it seems there might be an install procedure that I am just not seeing.

Thanks for all your help - I can see what a fiasco this NAS OS upgrade to DSM7 has been and appreciate your efforts.

There’s really not a lot to it, you don’t need tech skills.

Download the appropriate installer from this thread:
https://forums.plex.tv/t/dsm-7-packaging-2-0-forum-preview/732838/2

Open Package Center
Choose Manual Install
Select the installer you downloaded
Let it run.

You’re not migrating anything so there’s no trickery involved.

When it’s finished, web browse to http://synology-ip:32400/web and walk through the regular Plex set up process.

Job done.

Only caveat is to make sure you use the IP address for set up, if you use the QuickConnect or DDNS names (assuming you have them set up) the setup will complain as it wants to see you local first.

I’m sorry, that’s my fault. There has been so much attention on getting all the existing folks from the old DSM 6 operating system to the new DSM 7 operating system that I’ve not focused on new installations.

However, that said, When you first install the package, the final popup message (the one with the blue text) contains the instructions for giving Plex permission to read (see) your media on DSM 7.

New installations won’t see the ‘Migration’ info at the top but will see everything else.

I’m going to assume, as you state, this is a fiasco. I’d therefore like to recommend we start clean.

  1. In your Plex/web browser – Upper right corner – Sign out.

  2. Uninstall PMS from Package Center , choose the ERASE option (start over)

  3. Instead of installing from Plex.tv, I’m going to suggest you install the new PMS structure. It’ll make your life easier in the long term. This layout will be production status in a few days.

  4. My forum preview, with release information is here:

https://forums.plex.tv/t/dsm-7-packaging-2-0-forum-preview/732838/2

  1. All you need to do is- Install the package (Manual Install)

  2. As instructed by the final status popup (from package center)

  • Control Panel - Shared Folders

  • Edit one of your shared folders containing media files

  • Permissions Tab

  • Change the left corner drop down from “Local User” to “System Internal User”

  • Give PlexMediaServer R/W or R/O as you deem appropriate.

  • OK / Apply (to save that)

  • Repeat the above steps until all shared folders have been updated.

  1. Open http://ip.addr.of.syno:32400/web

  2. You will see a new installation (“Got It” message).

  3. It will also want you to sign in and “Claim it”. – let me know if this gives any issue because I’ve created an method in the installer which claims by itself for tough situations

That should be it. You’ll see PMS start indexing your media and you’ll be up and running.

Just for clarity, when you say this:

Repeat the above steps until all shared folders have been updated.

Do you mean literally all shared folders, regardless of whether they will be used by Plex or not need to have Plex as the owner/administrator?

I am unable to proceed in my fresh installation because the Plex installer says my “existing” shared folders need to be owned by the Plex user, but I have already changed all the media folders that I want Plex to use (just the Videos folder). Do I need to change all folders like Music, Pictures, Users, etc. to proceed with the installation?

EDIT: I found the solution. There was a folder that a previous attempt at installation had created (volume1/Plex or PlexMedia or something), but somehow it had lost access and the files were corrupt. I needed to SSH in to the Synology device and delete the folder from the volume, then try the installation again.

Maybe this is a question for @ChuckPa:

After updating to the latest PMS ( 1.24.4.5081) on DSM 7 today I’ve received the “log files window” again (the one where you can choose to keep the existing log files or move them to a new directory).
Is this a bug or does this window appear from time to time?

@Fluamsler

Not a bug.

In the original version (pre 1.24.2.4973), when the server metadata was hidden, we needed a means to always get access to the logs.

Now, since 1.24.2.4973, having managed to bring the entire shared folder out and visible, we no longer need a “Logs” option because you can use FileStation to drill down in just like you used to in the “Plex” shared folder.

What you see now in 1.24.2.4973 and above is as close to DSM 6 as I can get.

In PMS releases above 1.24.4.5081 (somewhere around / after that) the “Log” page is fully removed since it’s obsolete.
