Help! Install after upgrade to DSM 7 did not migrate my libraries

I’ve just upgraded to DSM 7, while following these insructions exactly:

However, at step 2 it says that the first installation will fail, and then I should give the proper permissions to PlexMediaServer – this did NOT happen. Instead, the installation finished without any errors.

Now, it’s like Plex has never been installed. My media libraries were not migrated.

I really don’t want to start from scratch. I have years of metadata which I’ve carefully curated.

Is there any way to now get my original libraries migrated properly?

  1. Synology Model?

  2. PMS version? 1.21.0.3744 (beta) from Package Center or a manual installation of the current version from plex.tv/downloads?

  3. Can you login to the Plex server? Using a private/incognito window, go to http://syno_ip_address:32400/web, using the actual IP address of the NAS.

  4. If you can login to the server, pull the log files and attach the entire zip file to the thread.

Hi, thanks for replying.

  1. DS918+

  2. PlexMediaServer-1.25.3.5385-f05b712b6-x86_64_DSM7.spk downloaded from plex.tv and manually installed

  3. Yes.

I originally said that it was like Plex had never been installed before, but I realise now that that’s not true. Here is what I see in the app:

So, it does seem to be aware that libraries existed, but I get this “media-server is currently unavailable” message.

Thanks for you help.

It appears that I now have two “media-servers”:

Is it possible that the one that can’t be accessed is my original library?

Hi @FordGuy61 , any idea how I can recover the lost libraries?

@silentmiles

Please look and confirm you still have Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server (in the “Plex” shared folder).

If you do then what you ended up with is a rogue PMS because of the 1.21.0.3744 beta.

This is easily correctable

  1. Uninstall the current package with the ERASE option to remove the rogue DSM 7 server.

  2. Install 1.25.3.5385 again.

  3. If it , rather quickly, claims success, again check Plex / Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server. IF your metadata is indeed still there then we do this again ( because DSM 7 beta has been known to create 2 rogue servers )

  4. If it doesn’t claim success, but instead sits there with Installing, then you’re on your way. It is performing the “migration” from DSM 6 → DSM 7.

Keep an eye on Plex/Migration.log (it does take a bit for it to show up sometimes)

After migration is complete, We’ll clean up the duplicate server listed by Plex.tv

Thanks @ChuckPa , I do indeed still have Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server.

When I uninstall PMS, should I also delete the new PlexMediaServer folder, or will the ERASE option do that?

You can delete the empty shared folder PlexMediaServer after you uninstall.

The package (DSM) will recreate it for you automatically.

Thanks @ChuckPa ! Your instructions worked perfectly, and my library has been migratred ok.
