Connecting to my network while away??

I have had Plex for awhile now and could never figure out how to connect to my network while on vacation? All I have ever seen is an “exclamation mark” next to “remote access” and when i click remote access it says “Not available outside your network. Your server is signed in to Plex, but is not reachable from outside your network.”

Any ideas? There must be away to access plex from my vacation destination etc?

My setup at home is internet provider is also my cable provider which runs router/modem in through one device.

Yes, this is common when your modem/router doesn’t support the UPNP (univeral plug and pray) protocol right.

The most stable method to achieve a connection from the Plex servers to your server is with manual port forwarding:

The procedure is:

  1. Log into your modem/router and open port 32400, your modem/router supports forwarding with port redirection (see what you can specify when performing the port forwarding, it will be obvious), and forward the port to the internal IP of your server (destination port 32400).

  2. Make certain port 32400 is open in your computer’s firewall.

  3. Go to a site (canuseeme.org is a good one) and verify port 32400 and the odd (if used) port is visible via your browser.

  4. Go back to Plex → Settings → Remote access and “Manually specify port” 32400

  5. Now connect

Below is how my server is connected. I have 2 (ports 32400 and 32401)

Thanks! I will try and following this method with hopes of success!

Cheers

Hmmm I just went to my ISP forum and someone says, “Yes, there is UPnP” ?? And in my router/modem this is “checked/enabled”

shrug

Bypass it. Do it manually.

My modem and router (two boxes) have and both don’t handle it right.

Bypass and go manually.

Upon further investigation I also have apple airport express connected as my wifi access point. If this makes a difference?

Hmmm sorry for all the posts. I had manual port forwarding checked in plex. So I unchecked port forwarding and now its fully accessible outside my network.

Sorry im very non technical as u can tell.

How do I connect outside my network?

The airport express changes everything IF one of your devices is wired and the other is wifi.

Also, if your server is going through the Airport express, Apple’s default configuration creates a separate subnet (e.g 192.168.1.x) to keep wifi addresses from colliding with wired addresses which are typically on the 192.168.0.x subnet.

Please detail for me:

  1. what is connected directly to the modem/router
  2. what is plugged into the back of the airport express
  3. what is connected via the airport express’s wifi

So have you now got the “fully accessible outside your network” message?
As ChuckPa said… now go to canyouseeme.org and check there… as an extra check if you have Plex installed on a 3/4G phone or tablet make sure wifi is OFF and try to connect.
