I noticed that PlexAmp uses the sort name from MusicBrainz, as it should, which is all good, except that a lot of work needs to go into MusicBrainz to get it all consistent, I would suggest a setting to disregard that meta and just sort as any ordinary player or streaming service does for artists. i.e. name and second name(surname) etc. I have over a thousand artists in my library and it gets very taxing when I am looking for stuff.
I’m not sure I get your point… do you want that option for Plexamp to ignore the sort title entirely or just for single artists?
Hi @tom80H, I think that’s it, let me use example… Below is sorting for Spotify for Arists under “A”, all artists with names starting with A appear in this segment:
below is the same sorting in Plex: depending on how the sort is defined in MusicBrainz, an artist with a first name A or second name A will appear in this segment, some are titled and sorted corrects, others not so much, depending on who made the edit:
I guess the request is to have a toggle to ignore “sort artist” field and just use “artist” field only.
ok… but then it’s not so much about Plexamp but about PMS music metadata handling in general.
Maybe, but I would rather have that toggle purely in PlexAmp only. Do not mind the rest of the other players.
Plexamp is using the same artist sorting as all the other Plex apps, if you pick “Title” as the sorting criterium.
You can see that “Various Artists” are at first position in this screenshot, because I edited the Artist Sort title in Plex to achieve that:

Plex doesn’t use the Sort Title from Musicbrainz directly.
These deviant sortings are coming from your files. (They might have been embedded by Musicbrainz Picard though.)
If any of them have an embedded “Artist Sort” meta tag, Plex is using its content.
If you don’t want that, verify that none of your songs has this “Artist Sort” meta tag.
You will have to edit the affected artists and make sure that the contents of the Artist title and the Artist Sort title are identical.
(You might wanna tell Musicbrainz Picard to not embed the ArtistSort tag in general. See [HowTo] Music Organizing with MusicBrainz Picard - #6 by OttoKerner for instructions.)
You’re absolutely right @OttoKerner. Thanks for that. Tried stripping meta from one artist and matched with Plex and it sorted correctly. I have updated Picard to disregard that field in my tagging. Used MediaMonkey to strip all tags and re-update, refresh and voila‼️ Thanks a lot for that.
In Picard add this tagger script:
$delete(artistsort)
$delete(albumartistsort)
Already done, thanks.
I posted it so people searching this topic will have the answer
