Consistent frame drops and crash afterwards

Server Version#: 1.18.8.2527
Player Version#: 7.28.155.0.1 (tried 7.29.2.16071 but would not find media server)

Consistently drops frames then crashes. This happens frequently. Can someone please analyze my logs and let me know if anything is out of place here? I would like to know if it’s a file issue or a plex issue. This happens frequently but some files play just fine. Please note that I am using the “old” video player (exo2) instead of the “new”, as the new does not work at all. See log links. Any help is greatly appreciated.

We likely won’t be fixing much in the old player, as we’ll be moving to the new player (both happen to use Exoplayer V2). If you could provide some more information about the issues you see with the new player, that would be most helpful.

When I try to use the new player, it gives an error that it cannot connect to the server. If I switch back to the old player it works fine. I have tried the latest Android TV client but it doesn’t seem to work either, cannot connect to server. I have checked my network settings and everything seems correct, so I am at a loss here. I have attached my latest logs. Are there any key lines I should be looking for that indicate a problem? 032420.txt (1.2 MB)

@DaveBinM There are several threads talking about how the new player causes the “cannot connect to server” error on Android clients, some are several months old.

If I remember correctly, its been linked by a few users to how Plex handles a certain audio codec.

I’ll have a look at this today, and pass along to engineering if required. In the meantime, could you both (@Marc426 and @Dalmus) try the new release, which is 7.30, it contains several improvements for the new player.

Thank you, much appreciated! Yes I will give the new version 7.30 a shot and let you know how it goes, thanks again!

Hi, Just a followup, ver 7.30 is still presenting the same problems. It will work but only with old player.

Can you please reproduce the issue with 7.30, and provide some logs from the client and server, please? :plexheart:

I am having the same issue: After a period of time Plex starts to lag/stutter and when I try to back out of the video the Plex App crashes and takes me to the default Nvidia/Android TV menu screen.
Plex Server is on a Synology DS416Play
Plex Client on Nvidia Shield TV (2019; not Pro) (Plex app version 7.31.0.16549). I signed up for the Beta because someone said it was fixed in Beta but it hasn’t changed my situation.
I tried to turn on network logging on the Nvidia Shield but it stops before the problem occurs. I have attached my server log.Plex Media Server.log (3.2 MB)

Edit: I’d like to add that this is happening with direct play. I set up everything so I wouldn’t need any transcoding at home.

Also, everything is using the wired network (no WiFi)

Dashboard says the files I’m running that have most recently displayed this problem are streaming at around 10-12Mbps.

I don’t have any 4K content. Most of my files are 1080 MKV files (h.265, AC3, Includes PGS subs).

Hope that helps.

Can you reproduce this and please provide logs from both the client AND server?

I have tried to get the Client logs off my Nvidia Shield TV by following the instructions on this page: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201573117-android-android-tv-fire-tv-logs/

My understanding is that I have to enable network logging before I reproduce the problem in order to get the logs. However, network logging turns itself off after 20 minutes and it has been taking longer than that to reproduce the problem.

Am I mistaken? Can I enable network logging after the problem occurs and PLEX crashes in order to get the logs?

Yeah, it’s logging the whole time, they’re just not available for download until you turn that on. So you can reproduce the issue, then turn on logging and get them

OK, I was able to reproduce the event and capture the logs for both the Client and the Server (attached).

Thanks for taking the time to investigate!

I noticed that my Plex client version updated since I posted my logs.

Now I am at Plex Client version 7.31.0.16605 (on Nvida Shield TV 2019).
My Plex Server is at Version 1.18.9.2578 (on Synology DS416play).

I was getting a lot of frame drops and tried to back out. Not sure if it crashed or if it eventually caught up to me hitting the back button a lot but I ended up at the Android TV menu.

Here are my new logs:
Plex Media Server.log (7.7 MB)
NvidiaShieldTV_PLEXclient_20200406.log (1.2 MB)

Edit 7 April: I wasn’t sure if the app crashed to the Android TV menu in the above logs.
I reproduced the event again but this time I didn’t mess with the remote until the Plex app crashed. New logs below:
Plex Media Server 20200407.log (8.2 MB)
NvidiaShieldTV_PLEXclient 20200407.log (1.1 MB)

Edit 9 April: After reading the previous posts about New and Old players, I decided to try turning off the New player in the settings. So far I have not had any noticeable dropped frames or crashing while using the “Old” player. I am direct playing a file that has the following attributes: 1080p HEVC, MKV, DTS-HD HRA 5.1 Audio, PGS subtitles. When I use the “New” player I still get the errors (dropped frames and crashes). Hopefully that helps narrow things down.

Thanks, I can see a couple of things in there like e: [ExoPlayer][EventLogger] audioTrackUnderrun [3382.88, 3315.34, window=0, 562500, -9223372036854775807, 2640]] and have asked one of the engineers to investigate further

I appreciate you looking into it. Since I was running the client beta I went ahead and made my own post in the Android TV Beta section. My client has updated since this post and I provided more up to date logs there. I also included some information about my equipment and settings if that helps.
