Constant Direct Play buffering

Server Version#: 1.25.6.5577
Player Version#: 8.31.0.31215

Since some days a few minutes after I start playing high-bandwidth content (4K HDR above 50 Mbps) the audio & video starts to hang more and more often and finally it stops and has the buffer circle which never goes away anymore.

This is the server side bandwidth usage showing the whole timeframe of starting the movie until “circle of endless buffering”.


Those bandwidth spikes between the 40s mark and JETZT do nothing at the player side. The constant buffering started shortly after the 50s mark.

The device is either a Sony A90J or a nVIDIA Shield TV Pro. Exact same issues.

My WiFi is fine because when I access the files directly through SMB Windows Share using the nVIDIA Shield and any player software, the file plays perfectly fine. Also copying the file onto an externally attached storage works perfectly fine with constantly above 100 MByte/s.

I already cleared the cache of the players. Already restarted PMS. Already restarted the NAS. Already restarted the Shield and TV. Nothing helps.

It feels like there is a buffer filling up causing the hangs and finally the “endless buffer circle” once its completely full.

Having this same issue on my shield with high bitrade UHD content.

Did some testing and sure enough anything with TrueHD tracks was buffering, skipping, and eventually failing. Thank you @VBB .
